As you have his NSW birth registration, may I suggest you consider obtaining a copy of the official transcription of that birth registration as one of the significant questions asked by NSW BDM about a baby's parents was when and where married, and the question was asked from the commencement of civil registration (March 1856).    Of course, the response would need to be verified by further research.

Cheers,  JM

Thanks JM your response.
Unfortunately our 'budget' to cover the cost of researching the 149 men listed on our WW1 HB doesn't extend to purchasing BDM's

Thanks wivenhoe
... will look into possibility of William & Michael as brothers - appreciate your detailed response.

Re James death 1915 - seen that but couldn't connect a birth registration nor one for brother John.  Could be they were born interstate or overseas prior to parents arrival into NSW.

Thanks Bonnie

Hi Muss ... that looks a good fit, with Thomas's birth 1885 which could mean that Michael & Mary arrived into the Colony with children James & John ...  will investigate further.
Thanks. Bonnie

There may have also been younger children.

There is a Patrick Joseph Leonard, father Michael, who signed up for WWI ( find him at http://naa.gov.au/collection/search/ ).  He says he was born Ultimo, his parents were Michael and Mary.

Thanks jorose ... hadn't seen Patrick Joseph Leonard's WW1 service.

It is getting complicated with another Michael & Mary LEONARD having children around the same time though there are some listings with the other Mary second initial shown as 'E" and district Waterloo.

I posted incorrectly on my initial message that William's brother Thomas was born in 1885 - should be 1895 and he died in 1940.

It would seem that James was the first born in NSW Colony 1885 to Michael & Mary Leonard in the district of Sydney - followed by William in 1887, Mary C., 1891, Thomas 1895 and Patrick Joseph 1897.

Death of John Leonard September 1944 aged 62 put his birth around 1882 but where?

Thanks again to all for your input, I am going to put this one to bed.
