I'm a little confused about that marriage  :-\

FreeBMD has a marriage entry for Dudley Registration District - March quarter 1840 - page 331.

William Paine and Gwinney Peters appear on that page.

Does that mean that the GRO is wrong?  Where does the surname Davi(e)s come from?

Thanks for the input and observations, I have over 15 years research, But it is the 1841 and earlier that I am attempting to resolve.
Geoff
I am aware of other trees without the accuracy or content of mine.

If you are trying to go back ...then what hints can you glean from the 1840 marriage? Fathers names and occupations, witnesses names etc.

Also, I think from your other threads, that you have some siblings (or possible siblings?) for William Payne/Davies. Have you any clues from their marriages? eg same father's name and occupation, siblings witnessing each others marriages etc?

I agree with lizdb - what are the details on the 1840 marriage entry?  AND I'm still confused by the Davi(e)s Pa(iy)n(e) connection.

As I see it, from the information you have given:

1840 marriage - Paine
1841 census - Davis
1851 census - Payne
1861 census - Paine
1871 census - Davis
1881 census - Davies
