Roffey families of Burstow and Copthorne Surrey
« on: Thursday 27 November 14 19:16 GMT (UK) »
Hi,  I have researched my Roffey background back to Robert Roffey (1765-1819 Burstow) and his wife Sarah Legge (1772-1840) Burstow.  I am looking for information as to his parents and siblings and any others who come before him.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks   Bet

Hi Bet,

A very warm welcome to Rootschat!

There is on familysearch, this possible baptism:

Robert Roffey baptised 20th Aug 1764 in Horne, Surrey to parents Job & Mary Roffey. Here is a link to it: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:ND7P-J24

Horne is roughly only about 2 to 2 and a half miles from Burstow.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

Siblings:
Mary 1761
Job 1762
Martha 1767
William 1775
Richard 1778
all Horne except the last two who were born Horley.
Job married Mary Ledger 29/12/1760 Horne.
No Roffey or Ledger witnesses.
This looks like Mary's Baptism;
Mary Ledger 26 Jul 1741 Horne, St Mary's
Parents: Joseph & Mary
There's also this one which is less likely:
Mary Ledger 22 Sep 1744 Horne, St Mary's
Parents; Richard & Mary

Welcome to Rootschat.
Another possible;

ROBERT Roffey Baptised 15 Nov 1764, St Bartholomew, Burstow
Parents LAZARUS/SARAH
Siblings;
JOB Roffey, 07 March 1766
LAZARUS Roffey, 08 Nov 1767
ANN Rofee, 08 Oct 1775, abode Worth

A LAZARUS Roffee was Buried same Church, 22 Jan 1776, Occp Labourer

Source of above FreeREG

Lazarus ROFFEY Married Sarah CRIPPS, 1763 Horne, Surrey
(Source Familysearch.Org)

Now they may have moved between Surrey/Sussex.
Ann 1775's Baptism has them resident in Worth.
According to F/S LAZARUS/SARAH Baptised in Worth, Sussex;
JANE, 04 March 1770

So that makes;
Robert 1764
Job 1766
Lazarus 1767
Jane 1770
Ann 1775

A JOB Roffey Married Sarah WARE, 3 March 1794    Burstow, Surrey
I can find only 1 Child to them LAZARUS Baptised 02 April 1797, Worth, Sussex
(Both on Familysearch.Org)
EDIT another Child St B, Burstow, SARAH Roffey 05 Jan 1800, to Job/Sarah, Mother nee Ware (FreeREG)

Hi,  Thanks for your help!  I am tending to go with the Robert born in Burstow whose parents are lazarus and Sarah.  When going through the baptisms for children of Lazarus and Sarah. I also came across a Mary 1774.  Does anyone else have that as well?
Would anyone have any suggestions as to the parents of Lazarus Roffey?

Thanks for all your help.  Bet

Hello all

The Robert Roffey who married Sarah Legge was the son of Lazarus Roffey and Sarah Cripps. He was a second cousin of the Robert Roffey who married Mary Ledger. It all gets confusing as the same names are used in many family lines.

Hello once more

Lazarus Roffey's parents were Robert Roffey (1698-1745) and Lydia Harber (various spellings).

The road in Copthorne called Roffey's Close is named after that line of the family who farmed there in 19th century.

Thank you all for your information!!!!   It confirms what I had thought.  Are there any family stories about the origins of the Roffey's in England.    Bet

Hi everyone,
I am researching my Harber ( Harbour Harborugh Harborrow - so many different spellings!) in Burstow and Worth and Horne. A few of my Harbers married Roffeys  , Margaret Harborow was one she married Thomas Roffey in Burstow but I don't know when. She was born in 1667 to my 8 x great grandad Thomas Harber, who died 1705 Worth. ( I can't find his marriage)
Anyway I'd appreciate any info that may tie in with my family on Roffey or Harber. I hope to hear soon.
