Very Confusing Tale
« on: Monday 01 December 14 17:32 GMT (UK) »
I've tried to explain this story a lot without it sounding long winded and very confusing. So below I have copied some research I have based on my 3X Great Grandmother, Caroline between the 1861 and 1911 censuses. Two families seem to cross over and two surnames are used for marriages and births. Desperately need some help or at least another person's viewpoint of this as it is driving me crackers. Caroline and her siblings were registered at birth as Butchers but seem to use the Didlock surname as well.

You might find it easier to start from the bottom and work your way up. Hope someone can shed some light on this!

Hi Mook

What information did Joshua give about his father in both his marriages?

On his marriage in 1851 he lists his father as Samuel DIDLICK (Collier).

You don't give the 1841 census so I will post this.
1841 HO107/921 book 9  folio 27 page 4
Cainham, Shropshire
Samuel Didlick  30 coal miner born in county - yes
Amy Didlick  30 yes
Joshua Didlick  13 Yes
Thomas Didlick  10 yes
Samuel Didlick  2 yes

Above them is a Mary Didlick age 80 widow of George Didlick, coal miner. She is not born in county.
With her is Mary Didlick age 15, Edwin James Didlick age 15 both born in county. On the opposite page is a James Didlick and family and he is not born in county.

1851 census
Mary Didlick  84 pauper Burnfied herefordshire
Samuel Didlick  45 son coal miner Cainham
Eney (Amy) Didlick  46 dau in law Cainham
 Joshua Didlick  23 g/son Cainham
 Thomas Didlick  19 g/son Cainham
 Samuel Didlick  10 g/son Cainham
Mary Ann Didlick  7 g/dau Cainham
 Lucy Didlick  6 g/dau Cainham
 Jane Didlick  4 g/dau Cainham

So sometime between the census in 1851 and Dec 1/4 marriage Joshua changed his surname to Butcher but is recorded as Didlick in 1861/1871 and only appears as Butcher in the 1881 census?

Hi

A possible explanation is that Joshua was illegitimate. He may have been baptised in Caynham in 1832 but surname is given as Didlake. There is a marriage of a Samuel Didlake and Eunice Ann Butcher in Caynham 10th June 1830.

The 1851 census has them in Ludlow
Mary Didlick widow b Brimfield Herefordshire 84 Pauper
Samuel son 45 coal miner
Eney d in law 46
Joshua 23
Thomas 19
Samuel 10
Mary Ann7
Lucy 6
Jane 4

There are baptisms for the youngest children showing on Family Search in Knowbury, Shropshire under the surname Didlick.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

1881
15 & 16, 15, Bilston Street, Darlaston, Walsall, Staffordshire, England
William R   Iron   Head   Married   Male   50   1831   Butcher   Curdworth, Warwickshire, England
Maria   Iron   Wife   Married   Female   48   1833   -   Warwickshire, England
Henry   Iron   Son   Single   Male   22   1859   Butcher   Darlaston, Staffordshire, England
Caroline   Dedlock   Servant   Single   Female   22   1859   Genl Serv Domestic   Round Oak, Staffordshire, England
•   Maria, wife of Joshua (10 years previous) is now listed as being married to a William R. Iron.
•   Maria’s daughter, Caroline is listed in this household as Servant.

Are you sure this is Maria mother of Caroline wife of Joshua Didlick/Butcher? She says she is born Warwickshire and Maria was always born Caynham. I can't see a marriage for them 1871 to 1881 but I can see a death of a Maria Butcher age 43 Dec 1/4 1874 Stourbridge registration district which includes Kingswinford where all the children except Caroline were registered.

Maria Ison and son Henry are on the 1891 census. She a butcheress and Henry a butcher. Maria is born Whiteacre Warwickshire and Henry born Darlaston. Henry is down as her son not her stepson which he would be if this Maria was the ex wife of Joshua Iron/Butcher.
RG12 piece 2246 folio 9 page 11

Ah! found them on the 1871 as Ison.
So this is not your Maria Didlick/Butcher
RG10/2955/65/3
William R Ison  40 born Curdworth Warwickshire
Maria Ison  58 Whiteacre Warwickshire
Sarah Ison  15 Darlaston Staffordshire
Henry Ison  12 Darlaston Staffordshire
Caroline Evans  29 servant Cosely Staffordshire

This is the marriage of Caroline Didlick and James Mooney which fits with all the censuses you have for them as a married couple to 1911.
June 1/4 1882
Caroline  Didlock
James Mooney
registration district Dudley  6c/110

Do you have James Mooney and Caroline's marriage certificate?
