I'm a complete novice as regards researching German roots but would like to know how easy (or difficult) it would be to find out about the family of a person who was born in 1945 in Donaueschingen, in the Black Forest area. 
Any advice gladly received.

also try the main search engine of the familysearch.org site as sometimes the International Genealogical Index had entries from different parts of Germany.....

You won't find recent details (such as census, vital records) online and I suspect that you would not be allowed to purchase a recent certificate unless if was for yourself.
