Fethney of Blackburn
« on: Thursday 04 December 14 11:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to trace my ancestors of the "Fethney" family, (the surname may have been spelt as Fithney), in particular a Peter Fethney. The only details that I seem to be able to find are he is the father of a John Fethney born in 1825 in Blackburn. Ideally I am looking for the birth and marriage of Peter.

Can anyone help with suggestions or have access to the Blackburn parish records? I have looked on-line at ancestry.co.uk, familyserach.org & findmypast but unable to find further details.

Regrads

Did you find this on Lan-opc? There are several variations on the spelling of the surname for people  in Blackburn, Oldham, Bury and I did notice a Peter bap Bury 1836 son of William and Eliza. Couldn't find Peter, the father of John who m Ann Pickup. Some of the entries seem to be Catholic. Could they be Irish in origin? cb

Does John have siblings?
In other words is he the eldest child (so marriage may be just before his birth) or is he the youngest of a large family spread over many years (so marriage may be 20 years or so earlier).

Have you found John's christening? Who is his mother?

Hi Clayton,

I was able to find John's marriage to Anne Pickup that confirmed Peter as John's father and I am not aware of any Irish connection.

Hi Lizdb,

I do not know if John has any siblings - but I have looked for the marriage of Peter up to 15 years prior to John's birth. I have not found either John's christening or the name of John's mother.

If you look at the 1851 census for Manchester you can see John  says he was born in Bradford. I know he says he was born in Blackburn in 1861 but that could be a mistake. So I looked for a Peter Fethney born Bradford and he is in Blackburn in 1851 as a lodger, widower age 59. He seems to be a water dresser (master) but I have probably read that wrong as it doesn't make sense to me. cb

Hi Clayton,

Many thanks for the info I hadn't seen that entry out the 1851 census.

I would go one step at a time, and not even begin to think about Peter and his birth until you have found Johns christening, and about his family, then use that info to work towards Peter and his marriage and then back to his birth.
Just grabbing at a random Peter Fethney without any more info about him sounds risky - he might be a brother/cousin/ etc. You have no idea how old Johns father might be - he could have been 16 or 70 when John was born!

Hi Lizdb,

Thanks for the advise, although I appear to be drawing blanks with John's siblings and baptism.
