Kilwaren in Ayrshire?
« on: Tuesday 23 December 14 07:10 GMT (UK) »
Hi-I am looking at 40 year old handwritten note about an ancestor which says he was born in Ayrshire, Kilwaren Scotland in 1865. Cannot find anyplace named Kilwaren in the Ayrshire area.  I am thinking it must be a misunderstood pronunciation of "Kilwinning" or "Kilmarnock" or Kyle----" section of Ayrshire, but thought I'd ask here, just in case there is (or was) a place named Kilwaren during that time period. Thanks for any help.

HI jmara

What was your ancestor's name? That might help in confirming the name place.

The last name was Heenan. I believe his parents were John Heenan and Margaret Gaetens and he was baptized at St. Patrick's in Glasgow in 1865. The sponsors were named Gallagher if that helps. Thanks.

Hi Jmara,

Haven't heard of a Kilwaren in Ayrshire.
Throwing a curve ball here....could Kilwaren or Kilwarren be a place in Ireland?
Certainly the surnames involved appear to be of Irish origin. You didn't mention a first name...is it Thomas ?

Looby :)

Found several children for John Heenan & Margaret Gaetens (married 17 Jul 1863 Tradeston, Glasgow) born in Glasgow area (Thomas in 1864 in Anderston) but can't see any Ayrshire borths. Have you traced the family in all possible census records to check birthplaces?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank You! Yes, I tried to do that (without burning up all my cash) on Scotlandspeople. That is actually how I found the baptismal information; by querying for all Heenans in Scotland for a ten year time period surrounding my ancestor's birth. I did not find any other children for John and Margaret, though---how did you locate them? Kilwaren, Ayrshire is  something my father wrote down years ago that he got from another relative. It is possible that the information was wrong. I know they were Catholic, so I guess that the best thing to do would be to rely on the Catholic church records rather than hearsay. It does not seem to make sense that if he were born in  Ayrshire he would be baptized in St. Patrick's  in Glasgow. Would you be able to send me the information you have on the other siblings (or tell me how to locate it?) Thank You so Much!

Yes, the forename was Thomas. I never thought to look at Ireland! They did come from Ireland but I thought they'd been in Scotland a few generations. I just did a check in Ireland and found towns named Kilronan and Kilmore, which are close. I still wonder, though, if Kilwinning might be it... it seems they may have been in the wool trade (for lack of better term) in Scotland if that helps any.  Thank You for your help! Any other information on Thomas, John, Margaret and their family would be appreciated!
