South Stoneham had a union workhouse in the village of West End near Southampton. It is just possible that your relative died at the workhouse. If that was the case there would be no public announcement of the death such as in the BMD column of a local paper and the funeral/ burial would be at an unmarked grave. Similarly it would not be the practice to have an obituary [ie details of the life of the deceased] in a newspaper. If you have a copy of the death certificate the address on it may offer a clue. "Workhouses" were not referred to as such to avoid any embarassment to the family but the West End workhouse was on official documents shown as 1 Botley Road, West End.

Hello cemetery friends

As far as I am aware Harford Lury remained a Quaker:  they did look after their own should they fall on hard times. Actually I think being a Quaker [or a Friend as some termed the group] must have been a very nice and supportive environment and one that would be welcomed in our current world.

Nonetheless I thank you for your reply.

Happy New Year :)

Society of Friends have meeting Houses at Southampton and Winchester. The Southampton Friends Burial Ground dates from 1662. The Old Cemetery at Southampton previously known as The Cemetery by the Common or Hill Lane Cemetery was the first public cemetery in Britain to have a separate mortuary chapel and Hebrew burial area. I suggest this may have been the ground selected for the burial.
Rather than contact the Archives you will find that the Local Studies Library [in the same building but in the city library] has local newspapers on microfilm with facilities to print off a page. If you contact the library staff please add the important fact that he was a Quaker as they may hold separate information file. E mail local.studies@southampton.gov.uk

South Stoneham civil registration district saddles both Southampton City Archives and Hampshire County Record Office so if engaged in further research you may need to also contact Hampshire RO at Winchester and if you have not already made contact the Quaker Family History Society http://www.qfhs.co.uk/

Thank you so much for that information.  Certainly going that path should prove beneficial.
