Odd Fellows Inn North Parade Manthorpe Cum Little Gonerby Grantham
« on: Monday 29 December 14 17:17 GMT (UK) »
In the course of my research into my ancestor John Amos the Grantham chairmaker born abt 1764, I have established that before his death in 1842 he was living in North Parade (he owned property in North Parade) and is described as a "retailer of beer". The 1881 census reveals his granddaughter Millicent Priestman was a beer house keeper, Odd Fellows Inn at 35 North Parade. I don't think the Odd fellows Inn still exists, does anyone with knowledge of Grantham know what the building is now and does anyone have any further information about The Odd Fellows?
Thanks and a happy new year to all
Maggie B

Have a look at this

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grantham

Looks as if it is now The Red House. Also here http://red-house.com/index.html

Hi Groom,

I know the site says the Red House replaced the Oddfellows pub but I know that they are wrong as I played darts (for the Barley Mow)  at the Oddfellows in the early 60s and the pub was on the right hand side of the archway and was just a normal size house and we played darts in the small front room.I have a photo of the inside of the pub taken when my late aunt and uncle were there having a drink with friends.Do hope you don't mind my comments.

Hi maggie b
If you would like a copy of the photo if you send me a PM with your email address I can send you one.

Happy New Year to you both
Kathy

Hi Groom and tup1
Thanks for your interest; you are right Tup1. The Red House address is 74 North Parade, so must be a mistake on Wikipedia. I would love a pic of the inside of The Oddfellows, thank you for the offer; would you know if the building still exists and if so, is it now a house? I can be contacted direct on (*)
best wishes
Maggie B

Hi Maggie and Tup1

Just shows how Wiki can be wrong! I used to drink in The Beehive when I lived in Grantham while I did my teacher training.

The Oddfellows was a tiny, quaint little pub, I was in it, the night before it closed, in the 1970's.....it was like being in your own front room......it is now a private house, if you wish I can send you a photo of the outside as it is today........Regards Del.

Hello

A thread resurrection as I have just seen this post.

My Grandad was the landlord of the 'oddfellows arms' up until it closed in the 1970's. I have fond memories of visiting grandad and grandma at the pub.

It is the building to the right of the arch in the above mentioned photo of the red house and there is still the stained glass window above the front door with the writing 'Oddfellows Arms' .

If there are any photos or information still available please let me know.

Regards.

Thanks Del.

I'm only a few villages away and I pass it on occasion so looking for photos when it was open really. Tup1 has photos but not sure if he is still on the site?

Any information/stories/photos of Rex And Grace Pulfrey would be nice to know if there is anything.

Thank you.
