Lookup request please - birth of George Coulson TAYLOR born ca 1923 Glasgow
« on: Thursday 01 January 15 08:18 GMT (UK) »
Is there SKS who's going to New Register House who could look up the birth of George Taylor ca 1923 in Glasgow. He was aged 21 when he was killed in action on 15 May 1944 in Italy. He was the son of Edward TAYLOR and Margaret Bennie COULSON. There are too many to look up on Scotlandspeople without knowing the exact date or parents' names.

I'm particularly interested in the marriage date/place for his parents.

Many thanks for any help :-)

Jan, I think you have an old post here http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=18946&p=surnames.taylor

You mention on that that George likely born in Newcastle? Did you follow up on that?

Thanks, Rosie, yes that's my family - Elizabeth was my grandmother.

Monica, I didn't follow up on the Newcastle birth as I found his war record which stated he was born in Glasgow.

Name: George Taylor
Given Initials: G C
Rank: Trooper
Death Date: 15 May 1944
Number: 7949713
Birth Place: Glasgow
Residence: Glasgow
Branch at Enlistment: Royal Armoured Corps
Theatre of War: Italy
Regiment at Death: 17th/21st Lancers RAC
Branch at Death: Royal Armoured Corps

and

Name: TAYLOR, GEORGE COULSON
Initials: G C
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Trooper
Regiment/Service: Royal Armoured Corps
Unit Text: 17th/21st Lancers
Age: 21
Date of Death: 15/05/1944
Service No: 7949713
Additional information: Husband of Margaret Bennie Taylor, of Glasgow.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Joint grave XII. H. 7.
Cemetery: CASSINO WAR CEMETERY

BTW listing him as the husband, not the son, of Margaret Bennie Taylor, is an error.

I've been trying for years to find his parents' marriage and was hoping that George's birth entry would give me the date and place. They also had a son, Edward (D or V?) Taylor who was the informant on his uncle's death in 1947, but looking for his birth without a date is almost impossible. There's a likely one in 1918 in Dennistoun which is where the Coulson family lived, but it's not online.

Jan, as you know for sure, this is such a hard time to search for online with so many restrictions.

Just one thing you might want to do. SP have an offer letting you view for free the Valuation Roll index results page when you do a search online on the site. You then have to pay 2 units to view the actual image of the VR page, if you want to do this for a specific entry.

You might want to have a look for family up to 1925. If you, I would also keep a copy separately of the index results pages you have viewed. One day soon you may be able to connect things to addresses and having these later valuation roll names/addresses might help.

Just for background, in case most of the family as you say living around the Dennistoun area, this is a good overview of street names which might help with the VR (to check whether a spefic address fell in to the Dennistoun area). Just a guide really, not a precise science!

Can't see a Scottish marriage either, Rosie. Understand Jan why you are hunting down the children's (hopefully Scottish!) birth certs  ;)

Added: Was there an address included for informant Edward Taylor to his Uncle George's 1947 death?

Monica, thanks for the suggestion about the valuation rolls. My ggrandparents were still living at 20 Broompark Rd Dennistoun, which is where Margaret had been living before she died in hospital in 1944.

Then I found something interesting:
1920 VR
Edward Taylor 204 Govanhiill St Govan
1925 VR
Mrs Margaret Taylor 28 Govanhill St Govan

The houses are a fair way apart but it raises the possibility that perhaps Edward senior died sometime in that five year period. I checked SP but nothing matches up. Edward was a master mariner, according to Margaret's death cert, so perhaps he died at sea.

Unfortunately there was no address for Edward (the son) on Uncle George's death cert, just "nephew". I wondered why he wasn't the informant on his mother's death, then realised he was probably away fighting in the war.
