William Mackay George COMPLETED
« on: Friday 02 January 15 16:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I'm having great difficulty locating anything about the above person.  He appears on the 1898  Scottish death certificate of a distant cousin as 'married to William Mackay George, mining prospector'. The informant was her first cousin, in whose house she died.

There is no sign of him anywhere in the UK records (or, in fact, very little on the global searches that I've done).  The best hits that I've found so far are:

Various NZ Electoral Registers 1890 - 1900 - William M(a)ckay George, miner/resident/settler

Shipping - W M George travelled steerage from ? Melbourne to Dunedin (Minor Ports) on SS Mararoa Jan 6 1890  (Nationality - GB). Occ = Miners and Servants

Death - William McKay George - A-M-J 1913. Palmerston North, Wellington. Folio 1201

Also the  marriage of William Mckay George to a Mary Campbell Burgess 1864, Victoria, Australia (my relative was named Margaret Burgess, so wonder if Margt might have been transcribed as Mary :-\ ).

I would be grateful for any information on this William so that I can count him in or count him out!  I have info on Margaret to 1851, her death  and her direct family to present day, so I don't need anything on them.

Thanks.

 - this obituary of the man who died in 1913 seems to fit to some extent. He was Scottish originally,  his wife is said to have died "some years ago", "no family" (i.e. children - siblings of William are mentioned).  Was in Australia for some time (unspecified) then to NZ.

This might be a death notice for your lady?  Gives her as "late of Wellington"

Unfortunately if the 1864 marriage is right this notice doesn't give much info - W.M. George to Miss M.C. Burgess:

Josrose ~

Thank you so much. Those  do fit.

I found a birth for a William George in Halkirk, Caithness circa 1831, mmn McKay, which I thought looked a good possible.

The marriage notice means that the 1864 marriage is still possible, so will pursue that.

Thanks you  - now to try to find when they left for Australia.

Lucy - have that from the obit but thanks for looking  :)

Just checked up on  Sinclair George, brother, and he has the same parents - John George and Christian McKay, so William was the one I found earlier  :)

Thanks, Janette  :)

I'll have to pop across to Oz now!  Sad that they didn't have any children. I would have liked some more cousins!

Woooo - drinks all around - the marriage in Australia in 1864 was my Margaret - correct parents - bad indexing in Victoria!

Also thanks to Wiggy for guiding me through the process.

GEORGE William McKay
Gazetted 30 May 1865
Place Wood's Point, Victoria
Source Victoria Government Gazette  Page#1215
Gazette item sub title heading: Insolvencies

I doubt his obituary is accurate.

Charles  Joseph LA TROBE – Superintendent 1 Oct 1839 to 24 Jul 1851 Port Philip District of  the Colony of New South Wales and  Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Victoria 25 Jul  1851 to 5 May 1854.

The BLUE JACKET first arrived in Victoria in 1855 and in 1869 caught fire at sea and was abandoned.

I can't see Wm's arrival on the BLUE JACKET
http://prov.vic.gov.au/research/ships-and-shipping

I have searched the digitised newspapers http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper and can't find anything about a police constable Wm GEORGE and bushranger named FITZGERALD.

Hope you find the information useful.

Cheers  :)
