Thanks for the info on the insolvency (he's down as quartz miner) - it fits with his residence on the marriage cert.   

I was aware that much of the obit was questionable because of the LaTrobe and Blue Jacket dates. Thanks for verifying.

My main query now is when William and his siblings arrived in Australia. Sinclair died a few weeks after William (thanks KHP) but I have not been able to find an obit for him that might help with dates. Dee and Wiggy have been a great helped over there.

I've just found this info:

NZ marriage index:  1895  Catherine Sinclair George to John Colville (Folio 1343)
Australian death index: 1939 Catherine Sinclair Colville, Chatswood, NSW. Father Donald Mckay, mother Elizabeth.

William had a brother Donald.

So:

1862 - Donald McKay George to Elizabeth Holmes, Victoria
Also  1862: Sinclair George to Catherine Munro, Victoria

This is now the earliest date for the Georges in Australia*

Two of the George sisters, mentioned in the obit, were married in NZ:
1866  Ann George to James Nelson Owen
1867 Margaret George to Joseph Beale

*I've got Donald George, 19 and Sinclair George, 21 arriving Melbourne 13 April 1856 onboard the Royal Charter, from Liverpool.

Found the family in Caithness in 1841 as Georgeson
