The earliest date would be very late 1890's but more likely early - mid Edwardian.

Caz, I've just been sent the following image that the photo was on the back of.  Not sure what the date of 4 Dec 1926 refers to?  How old do you think the lady was as my GrGr Grandma was born in 1840 and died in 1925 and wondered if this was her?

That postage mark is a TIC which is Thomas Illingham and Co founded in 1904.  Postcards with the horseshoe date from the 1920s, which of course tallies with the date of 4 Dec 1926.

But as Jim has said, looking at her outfit, that doesn't tally with being 1920s.  Also if that is a white border, that's a more contemporary addition to photos (if you can, you really need to scan photos in colour as well as the backs as things like this provide lots of clues to dating photos).  It's an odd one.

If the photo back matches the front, then yes this could be Gt Gt Grandmother, but her outfit certainly throws a spanner in the works, and Jim is an expert on dating by fashion.  Could she have been 20+ years behind the times?  Possibly.

Now you have posted the back, Jim or China might have more to add.

   Reading the message (probably should have done that first), it looks like the "Aunties"(?)  have had this photo reprinted to use as a Christmas greeting card.   This would explain the dress style  of your Gt Gt Grandmother and the more contemporary card stock.   Just my thoughts..
