Bowness on Solway gravel pit / nature reserve.

Hello,

  I'm researching this gravel pit which belonged to Tilcon until 1977.  Then it became a nature reserve, using the water-filled pits as ponds.  Does anyone have details, memories or photos of the working pit pre-1977?  I hope to write an article for Cumbria Wildlife Trust, who run the nature reserve now.

You could ask the Cumbria County Council's planners if they have an old case file with photos of the site .

Thanks, Kay.  I just searched that website and found details of many gravel pits dating back to 1948.  Strangely, there is no record of the site at Bowness on Solway.  Maybe it was not active or maybe it was not in fact a gravel pit.  It's a mystery.
