Richard Barrett 1882-91 at Heythrop House
« on: Friday 09 January 15 17:17 GMT (UK) »
Hi

My great-grandfather, Richard Barrett, was a gamekeeper at Tehidy Park, Illogan, Cornwall and Heythrop House, 3 miles from Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire.

Between 1882 and 1891 he and his family moved to and away from Heythrop. I'm trying to pinpoint as near as possible in which years he arrived and left.

If anyone has access to Electoral Rolls for the area, probably for Chipping Norton, between those years, could a look-up be done for the first and last years where he would be recorded.

Thank you
Roger

Would he have been eligible to vote?

Quote from London Metropolitan Archives:

'before 1884 in rural areas most men could not vote and would not appear in the register.'

From 1884:

'The distinction between the county and borough franchise was effectively abolished, and every male householder was  now eligible to  vote.
However, half the men in the country were still unable to vote due to a clause in the Act which stated that ‘Where two or more men are owners either as joint tenants, or as tenants in common of an estate in any land or tenement,
one of such men, but not more than one shall ... be entitled to be registered as a voter.’
Therefore, adult sons living at home or heads of households who shared houses were not eligible to vote'

In answer to that Chempat, I have to say 'I just don't know'.

If that is the case, I am wondering 'where do I go from here'?

As the dates you give are between censuses, can I ask what document you found him on at Heythrop? That will at least pinpoint a time when he was there.
Did he have any children during that period? Their birthplaces might help, of so.
And is it very important to know the exact years he was there?
Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Richard and his wife Eliza had 9 children in total, 6 were born at Illogan, Cornwall and all their birth registrations are for Redruth, Cornwall.

The last three, Alfred (b 19/4/1884), Esther Mary (b 21/11/1887) and Frederick Watts (b 1890 registered in the first quarter), their births were all registered at Chipping Norton.

I have the birth certificates for Alfred and Esther Mary and they are both recorded as being born at Keeper's Lodge, Heythrop, Oxfordshire.

The 1891 Census shows the family living at Sandleford Park, Newbury, Berkshire.

Re "And is it very important to know the exact years he was there?", just plain old-fashioned curiosity really in trying to complete Richard's 'timeline' as accurately as possible.

The 1881 Census shows the family at Keeper's Lodge, Illogan, Cornwall.

Their sixth child's, Grace Bawden, birth was registered in the last quarter of 1882 in Redruth, Cornwall.

Hi Sue
In regard to more specific dates then the following may help?

Baptisms of their children at St Nicholas Church, Heythrop whilst the family were living at Heythrop and Richard was occupied as a Gamekeeper

8 May 1884 Alfred - Note this was a private baptism
5 Feb 1888 Esther Mary
2 March 1890 Frederick Watts

I expect you are aware that Chipping Norton, the nearby market town was the registration town which encompassed Heythrop?

I wonder if Richard was a keeper at Heythrop Park - google it if you havent already

Just to go back to the ER's.

Nowadays, we can show as on the ER in one place, but be living in another because one has moved just after the lists are published.
So any name on the list can be out-of-date (people show on the lists after they have died, sometimes for a year later).

NDRFT

Many thanks for those baptism dates, all new information for me. May I ask where you found the info?
Yep aware re Chipping Norton connection with Heythrop.
On the two birth certificates of Alfred and Esther Mary in my possession, both places of birth are recorded as "Keeper's Lodge, Heythrop, Oxon".
I have googled Heythrop Park but have found nothing re Richard.

Chempat

Agreed re the ER's.

In conclusion so far

I don't think I'm going to get any closer and just might have to settle for:

a) His move from Tehidy to Heythrop occurred some time between 1882 and 1884, after the birth of Grace Bawden (birth reg last quarter 1882) in Cornwall and before 19/4/1884, the birth of Alfred at Heythrop. The more I think about it, for that time, it must've been quite courageous to relocate himself, his wife and 4 children a distance of approximately 250 miles.

b) His move from Heythrop to Sandleford Park, Newbury occurred some time between 1890 and 1891, after the birth of Frederick Watts (birth reg first quarter 1890) in Heythrop and 5/4/1891, the date of the 1891 Census when the family is at Sandleford Park, Newbury. Another relocation but this time only approximately 50 miles!!!

Thanks to all for your help.
Roger
