Possible first world war casualty

hiya louise,he didnt die in the war,and there are no war graves in the churchyard that hes buried in,but he could have been invalided out of the army,then died later,so he wouldnt be entitled to a war grave,mack

Glad you have at least found something on the death of William. I have just had a run through the CWGC site with just W. Wilson as a search string. There is nothing about your William but significantly there are a number of deaths recorded post Armistice by as much as a month. It therefore seems fairly likely that your William was already discharged wounded and may well have died in hospital/home in England. His place of death in England may well not have been in his home town or even the county but you should find it in the GRO registers now you have the precise date. As has also been said, local newspapers should also have carried it almost as a special - "Local man dies of wounds a week after the war ends" or similar.

Sally, a rootschat member, is going to have a look at the newspapers for me next week in Coventry library and another friend, Sid is going to have a look at the burial register for Allesley next time he is in Warwick record office.

It is not clear to me yet that William's body is buried in the graveyard with his father, it may well be elsewhere. The stone says "In memory of my husband Daniel Wilson etc" on one face and "Also of our beloved son William Alfred etc" on another face.

Given that William died two years before Daniel I would have thought he would have already had a stone if he was buried there himself. The inclusion of his memorial on his father's gravestone suggests to me that he is not there but time will tell.

There is no war memorial in the village apparently but Sally has referred to a list of the fallen, I can't remember her precise wording, that she will also look at in Coventry.

I have tried to look at 1837.com but I cannot access the images from work, we dont have the software and I am not allowed to install it. I shall persuade my partner to let me use his laptop at home to have a look.

hiya louisr,i have the cwgc war graves registers for all of warwickshire,and hes not buried in that churchyard under a cwgc stone,but many familys preferred a family grave,so he may be in a private grave,i can eliminate coventry for you,i have the roll of honour,these are the only w wilsons from coventry.

As I reported in another link on this subject in the Warwickshire board, I have now found William's death.

He died in Allesley, near Coventry, of influenza and pneumonia on 19th November 1918 aged 32.

He was a Furnaceman by this time - that is what it says on his death certificate, I dont know what kind of furnaces or where.

There is no proof he was even in the army now.

I wonder if he was in a reserved occupation, having been a gardener. I dont know if he would have been to old to go to war anyway.

I just wanted you to know what I had found out with the help of a rootschat member
