Elizabeth Cruse : Searching for her Baptism
« on: Thursday 15 January 15 20:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I am looking for the baptism of Elizabeth Cruse c1759.

She married John Benwell in 1778 in Basingstoke by Licence. A witness to their marriage was Thomas Cruse.

Elizabeth was buried in Andover in 1838 age 79.

Thomas Cruse married Elizabeth Giet 9th May 1761 in Basingstoke. I am thinking that they could be her parents ?

Hello Colin

Thanks for searching her baptism.

That is the only one i have found also on Family Search. The year is about five years earlier than her burial age and Portsea is quite far from Basingstoke.

Hi Ravelin

Very interested to see the name Elizabeth Cruse & Basingstoke come up

My 3* Great-grandmother is  Elizabeth Cruse B.1802 Sherfield on Loddon which is 7.5 miles N.E of Basingstoke my Elizabeth is stated as  the d/o Thomas Cruse  circa 1756 [I have my suspicions of a cover up]. There is a  burial of an Elizabeth Cruse in 1787 in St Leonards  Sherfield on Loddon where Thomas Cruse was buried 2 May 1827. Could this be Elizabeth Cruse nee Giet?

Hello Paul C

I think my Elizabeth Cruse is probably the sister of your Thomas Cruse and they are probably the children of Thomas Cruse & Elizabeth Giet ?

Your Elizabeth b1802 must be the daughter of Thomas Cruse & Jane Clements who married 26 Jun 1785 in Sherfield on Loddon. Thomas & Jane had another daughter named Elizabeth born in 1786. She must be the 1787 burial in Sherfield on Loddon. I think the 1827 burial could be this Thomas ?

Here are two more burial's i found :
Elizabeth Cruse buried 1792 Basingstoke (born 1726).  (Probably Elizabeth Giet ?)
Thomas Cruse buried Basingstoke in 1811. (Probably Thomas the husband of Elizabeth Giet ?)

Possible name variation of Giet :
Guyatt : (Family with this name living in Basingstoke early 1800's.)
Gyatt.
Geat/es/s.

Hello Ravelin

Thanks for your reply and comments

I think my Elizabeth Cruse is probably the sister of your Thomas Cruse and they are probably the children of Thomas Cruse & Elizabeth Giet ? Agreed

Your Elizabeth b1802 must be the daughter of Thomas Cruse & Jane Clements who married 26 Jun 1785 in Sherfield on Loddon. Yes this is she , she married  George Cook  in 1823 in Sherfield on Loddon

Thomas & Jane had another daughter named Elizabeth born in 1786. She must be the 1787 burial in Sherfield on Loddon.  I hadn't got this Elizabeth so thank you for this. I am suspicious that my Elizabeth is the d/o Jane Clements as she would have been in her late 40's Early 50's in 1802 if her given ages are true.

I think the 1827 burial could be this Thomas ? Agreed I have corrected my information. The birth year on FindMyPast is correct for this Thomas

Here are two more burial's i found :
Elizabeth Cruse buried 1792 Basingstoke (born 1726).  (Probably Elizabeth Giet ?)
Thomas Cruse buried Basingstoke in 1811. (Probably Thomas the husband of Elizabeth Giet ?) Plan to take a trip to the local library to use their ancestry to see what I can find on these 2 but I think you are probably correct. I will let you know what I can find better still my wife may let me renew my sub to FindMyPast  :)

Thanks for the further info Paul C.

Glad you agree that our Cruse families are from the same family.

The surname Cruse is so rare in the area. That is why i think that my Elizabeth is probably the sister of your Thomas.

Perhaps they were Non Conformist and that is the reason why we can't find their baptisms ?

Family Search have your Elizabeth Cruse baptized 2nd May 1802 daughter of Thomas & Jane so that confirms her as the daughter of Jane.

Good luck with your search on Ancestry. Yes please let me know if you find out more info on the Cruse's.
