« on: Saturday 17 January 15 00:15 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am helping a friend and his grandparents are from Poland and possibly Germany.

He has the UK marriage certificate for them and we have the names of the grandparents and great grandfathers.

Boleslaw WIJA born about 1921 in Poland son of Joseph WIJA
Aloisia (Louise) BAUER born about 1928 in possibly Germany. Daughter of Anton BAUER

Any information would be great
Ketels, Linnell, Bourke, Watters
Withy, Griffiths, Boswell,
Bell, Hunter, Carley, Anderson
Lane, Higgs,

Hi

your friend might have luck:
Wija is today a name, which can be found only in and around
Cieszyn / Teschen / Český Těšín in Silesia.

http://www.moikrewni.pl/mapa/wzgledny/wija.html
The German / Polish border had been between Cieszyn and Racibórz / Ratibor (situation in 1921).

It might be helpful to check the online information databases of the state archives of Silesia (Województwo śląskie). The state archive might be in Katowice.

Bauer (= farmer) might be a Polish, Austrian, Czech or German family.
Today there are 30 living in Racibórz (and 170 000 Bauer persons in Germany) ...

It could be helpful to check if the Bauer family is catholic or protestant.

Good luck
Rudolf

Hi,

I have just found: http://www.katowice.ap.gov.pl/english/the_collection.htm in English!

I have never done research at a Polish State Archive, only at the town's archive of Gdansk / Danzig.

The google translator might be helpful, but at a certain point you will need a human translator ...

Hi,

a Roman Catholic Aloisia might be from Austria or Silesia -
not from Prussia (Lutheran & Reformed).

Galicia and Silesia had been Austrian in earlier times. - I think that the Cieszyn area might have been a melting pot ...

Hi,

there are only three Wija entries on familysearch.org.

The ancestors could have been Czech:

From Freistadt / Fryštát, part of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karviná in
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cieszyn_Silesia, a melting pot ...
