George Crewes and his parents John Crewes, Mary Ann Rivett
« on: Saturday 24 January 15 11:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
My wifes relative, George Crewes is a mystery
Born in about 1868, 1869 in Chatham, Kent, to John Crewes and Mary Ann Rivett, he is already living with his grandparents Robert and Mary Rivett in 1871, and he is back in Cornwall in 1881 living with his Grandmother, sister and other relatives.

He appears to have sister Mary Ann b1862, brother Robert  b1864. Mary Ann goes to Cornwall, Robert disappears and I cannot find him.

I cannot find any reference/certificate for the birth of George. Any clues would be appreciated

When George was married in 1901, the certificate states that his father was deceased and that he had been in the 81st regiment.

I cannot find any reference to the death of Georges parents, John Crewes or Mary Ann Rivett and I would appreciate any clues as to their fate

Many thanks in advance

Cheers Tim

According to an online tree the Rivett family are interesting. Robert Rivett was in the army according to the 1851 census, so the family probably travelled with him.

The two eldest children which includes Mary Ann were born in Enneskillen, Ireland. The next three in Australia, a son Robert was born at sea and the youngest children in Kent.

Medway parish C of E records are online.  Skinner Street is in Gillingham.

You might find his baptism. They won't help if they were baptised in a Catholic church though.

Many thanks all

So, the John Crewes in Probus in 1841 aged 9 is the person who goes to Chatham, and marries Mary Ann Rivett. I cannot find any details of the deaths of either of them, nor can I find any reference to the birth of George, apart from census records, no birth certificate or baptism as yet...

Very perplexing

Groom, you mentioned an online tree, could you tell me where you found that as I would be very interested in looking at that

Cheers Tim

It was on Ancestry - there are at least two public ones there and a few private ones. Unfortunately from what I can see that haven't added their sources.
