Seaweed

Thank you for that information.

Have had a look and find the files cost nothing to view at the National Archives but  GBP3.30 to download each file .. $21.00 NZ from New Zealand.

At the moment I will leave it as a last option  until after I contact the RZMC Museum at Trentham and see what they can produce.  This only takes a simple phone call!!

Again thank you for your interest

Hi,

According to the Arthur Hague convoy database (online) the only overseas vessel entering Wellington on 10th June '44 was the "Highland Princess", a troopship.  "Walking wounded" who didn't need full hospital services were sometimes (often ?) sent on troopers, so this could be the one you're looking for.

Arnold Hagues Database should not be relied on to be totally accurate.
However in this instance its seems he was correct insomuch that HIGHLAND PRINCESS did arrive in Wellington on 10/6/1944. Attached from my own primary records.
The logbook and crew agreement of HIGHLAND PRINCESS official number 161859 are easily obtainable but in my experience, for security reasons, will contain little of value.
It would be worth telling RZMC Museum about MaecW findings.

Seaweed, Maec and Leanne

I do much appreciate your interest and the information provided.

It is always useful to corroborate what you find on the internet with other records including Arnold Hague's database.   I have phoned the RNZMC Museum at Trentham and left a message as well sending an e mail inquiry.  Then followed this up with a phone call to the National Army Museum at Waiouru.  A very helpful lady there who assured me they have several records / books that will provide the identity of the ships that brought the injured soldier from Bari, Italy to Wellington, New Zealand in 1944.

As well I have also established the soldier spent some time in the Montecello War Veterans Home in Dunedin after the war for treatment.  This was administered by the Otago District Health Board and I am now considering going after his medical records to see what that discloses.

Again I much appreciate your time.

This might help a little

" Maunganui transported the sick and wounded from the Middle East to New Zealand. The Italian campaign saw casualties evacuated to 3NZGH Bari thence to Alexandria by hospital ship and by ambulance train to 1NZGH Helwan."

Cheers Janette

Hello all

Some further information discovered and confirmed today.  The hospital ship Wanganella was recorded in Wellington on 10.06.1944 after a voyage from the Middle East via Australia.  It returned again in September that year

This information can be found in Chapter 10, page 113 / 114 in the book "Wanganella and the Australian Trans Tasman Liners" published in 2009.  Author Peter Plowman.

Thank you for your assistance and interest
