Jane Davis of West Hendred
« on: Friday 30 January 15 15:39 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone please help me find the parents of Jane Davis, born 1842 in West Hendred.
She married Jacob Castle 1863 in Berkshire, and they had about 6 children.
She died in 1916 in Henley-on-Thames.
Thank you very much.
Townsie

Hi Townsie

You would  appear to have some more "digging" to do :)

This is from the the West Hendred P/Rs transcribed by OFHS

Marriage-03 May 1863
Jacob CASTLE fa bach lab s William lab
Jane DAVIS  17 sp   {no other info}
Wit=George Aldworth snr / Martha Haynes

These are  the only 2 entries for Davis at West Hendred

Hi Kim,
I've looked everywhere and can't find any more information on Jane Davis.
I can't even find a Robert and Eliza Davis, so I can't prove that they're the parents of Jane.
Thanks for your help anyway.
Townsie. :-*

Hi Townsie,

There is a birth registration for a Jane Davis in the Faringdon Reg. Dist Mar ¼ 1843 (Vol.6 Page. 187)
which may be her. Its the only one I could find.

I've had a look in the transcripts of Faringdon All Saints (from the Oxfordshire FHS) and there is this entry;
8-1-1843 Jane Davis d/o Clara, Servant.

I would think this the same person whose registration appears above.

I know its not West Hendred but Faringdon is not too far away.

I also found Clara's baptism in Faringdon;
24-10-1823 Clara Davis d/o Joseph & Jane, Pauper, born Oct 6th

This is looking like it could be the one your after.

If I've got the right Jane Castle on 1871 census with children George 7, Fanny 4 and William 3, living in West Hendred, she says she was born in Wantage.
In 1881 she has additional children, Edward, James Robert and Arthur, but she says birthplace is West Hendred. No mention of Faringdon. She is down as married but husband not with her on either census.
I have found a Jacob Castle who would fit the bill elsewhere in Berkshire.

West Hendred is 5 km east of Wantage. Faringdon, I think, was registration district for a wide area.

West Hendred is in the Wantage registration district. So if she was born in Wantage or West Hendred, her birth should be registered in the Wantage reg district.
But where she was born and where she was baptised could be different. If her mother was unmarried, she might have had her baby away from her usual residence but brought her baby back to her family home to be baptised.
If she was actually 17 when she married she should have been born about 1846.
The lack of parent details on marriage record might possibly indicate illegitimacy or she was orphaned young and didn't know her father.
Maybe she was "adopted" and assumed the name of adopted parents.
