Hello,
I am looking for assistance/mentoring in locating a military record. I have been unable to locate a record for my 2nd Great Grandfather.
(I have found another military record for a different person for the same period via ancestry.com but not for William.) Here are his details:
William GoodallBorn 19 May 1822, Riccall, Yorkshire
Also lived in the Leeds area of Yorkshire
1942 - Caught house breaking and stealing 18/- in coppers and 240 days for drunkenness and stopping out of barracks.
27 June 1842 - Was tried for this offense in Southampton Portsmouth
1 August 1842 - Embarked for Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania), Australia
On William's convict records it states:
37th Reg and 2nd ?
Distinctive Marks: Tattoos - Half moon, 7 stars. W R women on right arm. Anchor and several blue marks on left arm. INRI crucifixion. Woman man on horseback. Man with spear on breast. Scar on left shoulder.
His Trade: Labourer
I believe he was in the navy/military because:
1. He was a long way from his native place.
2. One of his offenses was "stopping out of barracks".
3. He had an anchor tattoo.
4. On his convict records it appears he was in the military, possibility the navy due to his offense being in the Southampton/Portsmouth area.
Convict records are fantastic for information. I not sure if I can attach William's record but it can easily be assessed via:
http://linctas.ent.sirsidynix.net.au/client/en_AU/names/Type in: Goodall, William
Record Type (on the left-hand side): Select "Convict" then select "Include"
My William is the second one: 1942
(not 1829).I look forward to receiving feedback on how to locate his records.
Best regards.
Wendy
