Ship "Ernestine" England to Australia 1869
« on: Sunday 08 February 15 00:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi All
Just wondering if anyone has information on the ship "Ernestine" that sailed to Australia from England on July 3 1869 and arrived Oct 1869. I had relatives on this ship but would like to know more about the actual voyage, the ship and food contents etc. I have searched quite a few sites but cannot seem to come up with much.
If anyone can give me links or help it would be appreciated.
thanks

Hi there,

The Ernestine seems to have sailed to the Colony of Victoria.

Have you checked the digitised newspapers available free to search online at the National Library of Australia's TROVE website ?   :)  :) Perhaps use the keyword 'Ernestine' and limit the search to Oct 1869 will give details about the ship, advertisements for the disposal of its cargo, the ports of call, and then if you search into the rest of 1869 perhaps there's advertisements with details for berths on the return voyage ....   http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/search?adv=y

Have you checked the passenger list that is INDEXED online at the Public Records Office of Victoria's website ?  http://prov.vic.gov.au/provguide-50

The above live links are available at RChat's Australia Board's Resources here:  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/australia-resources-offers/

Live Link for Museum of Victoria's online articles re Journeys to Australia .... 1850s-1870s  Some of the headings include:  Journey by steam; Navigating the Journey; Sailing Routes; Life at Sea; Privies and Hygiene; Recording the Journey ....

Thanks JM
I have been through Trove a number of times. I just now did a search with "shipping" and set the filters to Oct 69 and I went through until I found the date the ship arrived. Oct 13th 1869. Basically that's all I can find. There is no more details.
I have also been on PROV and I have the details of my passengers.
Thanks for the link to the museum of vic I will have a look and see if I can find any info there.
I was basically after details of how many on board, what cargo they might of had and other finer details but maybe I won't be able to get more.

LOL...I like you comment "gently mention"
Thanks again JM, sometimes it is better with a new set of eyes.
Sometimes it is hard to see the wood for the trees!

I had already searched for "Ernestine" but was not looking for sales etc, I was in the train of thought of it being all written up in an article from some reporter telling me what was on board and who etc.

More lessons learnt today.
Cheers  ;)
