Hi, wasn't really awake when I wrote the time before last.

the man in the photo is my grt grandfather, Thomas William Wenham. I've compared this photo with others that I have and I've dated it about 1935-1945. the lady in the middle is his wife Florence and the other in their daughter Violet (my grandmother) she died in January 1947. I have absolutely no idea who the girl is behind the bike!  I have a photo of my parents wedding taken in June 1947and Thomas William is there but not Florence. I have yet to find out when Florence died. Thomas died in 1953.

the address given might be where he was living in 1917-1918 but not neccessarily the address of the shop in the photo in 1935-1945.

Are there any directories for these decades?

All the available directories are at Canterbury libarary - see the link I posted above.  It should (hopefully) be quite easy to find the exact location ie.when they are listed next to HOOLEs in the directory.

hi Casalguidi and Spongebob,

I have just received a reply from the Community Librarian, Canterbury:

Thomas William Wenham 1933-1937 listed at 4 Dover Street
1937-8 at 11 Vernon Place, that means that the shop in the photo is either 4, Dover Street or 11 Vernon Place  he is not listed in the post war directories this fits in with my information as after the war he moved to Chatham to live with his son and daughter-in-law.

Okay, so I went out to look at the addresses and I'm still not sure of whether we've found it or not. So I'll just post the pictures of the addresses and you can make your own mind up.

Here is the first address for T W WENHAM of 19 Old Dover Road, as you can see from the picture this is a residental house with no shops in close proximity. It's the end of a terrace. I'm guessing he lived here at some point.



Here is the next address which is for T N HOOLE, newsagent which is 39 Palace Street. This is a shop, and does look on some points as it matches the original photo, which would make Wenhams 40 Palace Street, however its not an exact fit (the gap between the shops is much smaller in the new photo for example).



This is the third address for Stephen HOOLE, butcher of 8 Upper Bridge Street. As you can see this is a residental address, so not his place of business.



The final two pictures are 4 Dover Street and 11 Vernon Place, both very close to each other - one is a shop and the other a residential dwelling. However, I can't see any or many similarities between 4 Dover Street and the shop in the original photo. It could have been his second shop after he moved from the first of course. Note that both 40 Palace Street and 4 Dover Street have living accomodation above so I would assume he lived where he worked whilst he was in business.

how can I begin to thank you!

I'm not too sure if the dress shop is the bakery. but its interesting that 4, Dover Street is still a tobacconist as first he was listed as a confectîoner and then as tobacconist so that must be correct as so is Vernon Place.

hi,
had a look around familysearch. it would appear that Thomas N b. approx 1867 and Stephen I Hoole b. approx 1872 were brothers, Stephen married and in 1901 was given as 'Pork butcher journeyman'. in 1881 Thos N was 'apprent. Coach Painter'.
unfortunately neither of them are on GenesReunited!
hope that the weather in Canterbury is better than here in Switzerland, where it is raining and cold.

Okay, I had another chance to look at 8 Upper Bridge Street as I wasn't convinced this was right. The picture I had was in fact Lower Bridge Street. Number 8 Upper Bridge Street was much nearer 4 Dover Street, only about 10 feet actually. However, unfortunately the block of shops which 8 Upper Bridge Street now reside in are all relatively new - I'd say built in the 1960's. So it looks like if there ever was a Stephen Hoole, butcher at 8 Upper Bridge Street I think it was a victim of German bombing in the early 1940's.

thanks for looking even if the result wasn't what we had hoped for. I looked up Hoole in Canterbury on 192com. and have written to a Frederick Hoole, only 2 Hooles were listed, and sent him a copy of the photo, perhaps he might know something, I thought it worth a try, I'll keep you posted.
