George & David Penman
« on: Wednesday 18 February 15 22:59 GMT (UK) »
George Penman died in 1804 in Lot 13, Prince Edward Island Canada and David Penman died in 1824 in Tryon, PEI.  They were both living in Prince Edward Island (PEI) in the 1798 Census.  There is a record on Ancestry of a George and David Penman arriving at Boston in 1762.   We don't know the relationship between these two men but both named some of their daughters, Jane and Elizabeth.  Christy and Nancy as well as Margaret are names passed down in George's line.  George Penman appears to be married twice, 1st wife unknown and second wife's first name was Mary, the widow Cole, who had a son, Benjamin Cole born in 1762.  George Penman is the ancestor of famous author, Lucy Maud Montgomery, who wrote "Anne of Green Gables" published in 1908.

According to various sources, George Penman was a paymaster in the British army under Lord Rollo in 1775.  In his Estate papers in 1804, there were British redcoat military uniforms.  To date nobody has been able to find any military service for a George Penman.  According to the Montgomery family lore, George Penman came to PEI from New England, having lost all his possessions in the war.  We also have not been able to find a marriage record for George Penman anywhere in New England.  If any of this information is of interest, I would welcome a response.

Thank you.
