Joseph's wife - 1718
« on: Thursday 26 February 15 17:50 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to work out the first name of Joseph Pitman's wife in this 1718 marriage:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01eu2/ Ancestry has it transcribed as Mary, but surely there's an extra letter? I think I may have her burial, but that rather depends on what her first name is. Ideas please.

Looks like Marsy to me.

I also thought Marsy, or possibly Margy.  But you're right, there is definitely an extra letter there for it to be Mary

I have a Mercy and she is almost always transcribed as Mary  ::) .  I have spent many "happy" hours going through images looking for that extra letter.

I'd originally transcribed her as either Margy or Marsy. Now I've now found the burial of Mercy Pitman, widow, at the same church in 1775, and I'm pretty sure this is the same person. Your comments give me confidence I'm right, thanks everyone.
