Bastardy examination Garsington 1825
« on: Thursday 26 February 15 21:05 GMT (UK) »
While searching the Heritage Search on the Oxfordshire county council website, I came across this:

Clark, Mary
Bastardy examination, 26th Mar 1825
Garsington
Parish Garsington
Reference PARGarsington/b/12/p83

Would anybody be able to access more information about this? Mary Clark was an ancestor of mine and I would be interested to know anything about an illegitimate child of hers.
Thanks if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Greetings from Berlin  :)

Hi Decor,

In the transcripts  for Sandford on Thames (a neighbouring parish to Garsington) is this entry;
19-11-1826 Mary Clarke d/o Elizabeth of Sandford, spinster, base born.

Could this be the one subject to the Bastardy examination?

Ah, I thought that Mary Clark was the mother, not the child. :D
Worth checking out though, Alan.  :)

Mary later goes on to marry Joseph Goodey and you can find them in the 1841 still in Garsington.
It's the eldest two children, born pre-marriage, that I'm interested in:
Harriet (my ancestor) and William.
I assumed the bastardy examination was for William as it would fit with her estimated birth date.
I don't have all my notes to hand, but from memory, William's baptism in Garsington listed him as illegitimate but son of Joseph Goodey, whereas Harriet was just listed as illegitimate. I was hoping by some miracle that the 1825 bastardy examination would perhaps even shine some light onto whether Joseph Goodey was also Harriet's father.
Is there anyone with access to the Poor Law to check?
Thanks to all the kind people on this forum.
