Oh yes, I noticed that but I wondered how/why Bert, the original poster, thought this was the John Lewis ALDER that he is researching :-\
Hi, again, Daisypetal.
Actually, I am trying to track down information on the father (and English family) of John Lewis Alder, though any new information that I find about John Lewis Alder along the way is appreciated, too.

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

It looks like this John deserted, from "Army Deserters 1828-1840" at FindMyPast,

John ALDER
Age:  25
Birth year:  1815
Birth town:  Norham,  Durham
Summary:  98th Foot; 25; Norham; Durham; Carpenter; 27 Jul 1840

I found this burial  in Wisconsin but it doesn't mention a middle name.

Where does the middle name of Lewis come from and why do you think he was born in Norham?

Regards,
Daisy
Hi, Daisy.
I am not sure where the middle name, Lewis, originates, but I acquired that information from the family charts that my great grandfather (the grandson of John Lewis Alder) filled out in the 1930s.
Alder, Rosenbach/Rossenbach, Dutel, Margraff, Smith, Cilley, Pease, Morris, Dunn, McCollister/McAllister, Murphy, Gass, Topping, Eaves, Penrod, Newman, Rhodes

They are the index numbers you need to quote when ordering a certificate from the GRO - General Register Office.

Does his Army record have his full name. Is it available to view online.
Rosie
Hi, Rosie.
I could email you the whole enlistment document that was sent to me by a friend the other day.

No need thank you,
I was really interested to see if it had his middle name, place of birth and both queries have been answered here.

There's just the 1 Baptism in Norham:

There was also a Presbyterian Church at Norham which would be worth investigating for a baptism. However, I don't believe the records are available online - only at Northumberland Archives & Newcastle Library. http://www.genuki.bpears.org.uk/NBL/Norham/ChurchRecords.html

Hi again, Daisy.
Was there any other information accompanying the desertion info that you mentioned (familial info)? I am really curious to know if this was, in fact, my 4x-great grandfather. It might make some sense, considering that he never returned to England, and that he signed up to fight in the American Civil War when he was 45 (possibly to make up for having left the army previously?). Who knows? Sounds like I also need to set up an account at findmypast.

No Alder baptisms at Norham Presbyterian or Associated Congregation of Norham.  2 Elder baptisms but they were in the 1780's

There was an Alder family from Norham having children baptised in Spittal Presbyterian but no John Alder born around 1815 or so.  One in 1830.

Nothing in Cornhill.  Folks that lived in Norham used this parish sometimes.
