Thanks everyone for the interesting information. I had searched on the web for this occupation but only found the information on London Lightermen and Watermen. I guess I was wondering did the same apprentice laws apply in Northern Ireland. I have no idea what age he was or where he came from. Now I may conclude that perhaps he wasn't a legal Lighterman! I thought his occupation might lead me to where I could find him in later years.
