William Bevan Williams b1885 Magor Monmouthshire
« on: Friday 06 March 15 00:28 GMT (UK) »
Hello

William Bevan Williams emigrated to Australia sometime after 1911.

A relative found his attestation papers on NAA whilst looking for someone else. We know he is the right 'man' as he gave his next of kin as his father John Williams Grove farm Allt Yr Yn Magor.

From William's attestation papers we can see that he saw service in France in 1917 & was wounded - gunshot wound to right foot and later gassed He spent time in hospital in England and eventually went back to Australia. It is thought he returned to Australia aboard the ship HMAT Militades

We have not been able to find out what happened after his return to Australia.  Some where along the line, we have gleaned an address - Regent St Redfern Sydney. We don't know if this address is pre or post war.

I know this is all rather sketchy but we would really like to know what happened to him after he returned to Australia. We can't seem to find any records for him - neither marriage nor death.

It would be lovely if someone could possibly take the time to look some look ups.

Thanks in advance

Have a look at page 18 of the NAA file.  It seems to be dated 1931 and is referring to records stored in Melbourne being forwarded to Brisbane.

I wonder what was prompting the activity in 1931.

Cheers,  JM

Hi Lazydaisy,  :)
Somehow your post has landed on the "completed" board.

It seems he was in a spot of bother ... http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article75293369
http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/cite/13050104/117872451

From Gaol entrance books, it appears he arrived in 1910 on the Osterley and was born on the 12/10/1886 ... There are gaol photos for him ...

cheers,
  Ros

(perhaps he changed his name after his problems with the law  ;D)

I looked at that earlier, and decided perhaps they were two separate chaps,  one was 5 ft 0 inches and the other was 5 ft 1 1/4 inches.... same colour eyes, hair, but different scars, one born in England but is  Monmouthshire  technically England .....   ???

Thank you all for your replies.

I would think the William Bevan Williams in the newspaper articles is likely to be our 'man'. I had not seen the articles before.

Looks like he may have gone straight from prison (sentenced to 3 years in June 1914) into the AIF as the attestation papers were signed in April 1917

He seemed to have a bit of a problem with alcohol - going by his particulars of service from the attestation papers. Seemed to have issues with authority - disobeying orders, failing to salute & going awol .....
