Hi Richard
As far as I know he wasn't a convict, I have him as a Tailor.
Stephen

Sometimes "Sailor" can be misread as "Tailor" -might be worth checking

Strange that no one can find a census for 1841/51.   With the numerous children names one would think they would be easy to find? Even using Clark with or without an "E".

Search using William S Clarke

Think I have them in 1841

1851 Eliza's p.o.b. is Stamford Lincolnshire

There is a tree on A******y which gives p.o.b. as Stamford Northumberland
When it is I think Stamford Baron Northamptonshire on the border with Lincolnshire
Stamford Baron St Martin was a civil parish in Stamford England including southern part of Stamford south of the river Wellard and therefore historically part of Northamptonshire

1841 census has (or should have) ages of adults 15+ years rounded down to the nearest 5 years
No relationships are given
p.o.b. is only given as Y(yes) or N (no) depicting whether the person was born in the county(not necessarily town) they were living in.

It seems the family were non conformists

Baptism (from image)
Dissenting Chapel Stamford Lincolnshire
Eliza Clarke
born 15 Aug 1836
baptism 18 Sept 1836
parents William & Martha
address St Martin Stamford Burton
occupation Tailor (written clearly -so that confirms what you thought)

1841 Peterborough Northamptonshire
William Clarke 35 Tailor Journeyman No
William 9mths yes
Martha 37 yes
Thomas 8 no
Eliza 5 yes
HO107 816 11 13 18

1851
Brunswick Place New Windsor Berkshire
William S Clarke Head M 45 Tailor Middlesex
Martha wife 47 Burton Latimer Northamptonshire
Frederick son 6 Windsor Berks
Eliza daughter 14 Stamford Lincs
HO107 1695 400

wonder where Thomas was in 1851?

and where was he born??

Had martha been married previously?

On some trees she is given the name Martha Burgess Coleman??

Do you have one of the children's birth certs? This would give her maiden name

You thought Martha & William married c 1836 in Hunts -  the baptism of Eliza is in Stamford in 1836 - and if so whose son is Thomas??

Hi Suz
No I haven't got any certificates, as I live in Queensland, Australia I didn't know where to look.
I am thinking that Thomas would be 18 in 1851 and that he would of moved out.
Do you think that Thomas was born in Stamford same as his sister Eliza?
I will do a bit more researching and see what I come up with.
Thank you for all your help
Cheers

1841 states Thomas was not born in Northamptonshire - but Eliza was

You can order certificates on line from GRO -they cost £9 25p

I was wondering whether Martha had been previously married  -or maybe William had??

Or were there more children b earlier? Martha would be c 29 years of age when Thomas was born - so she could have been  either a late starter /been married previously

You have martha's marriage as 1837 if so then only William would have been born within the marriage -yet Eliza was baptised as if they were married

Hi Suz
I think I have just found where Thomas was born, they were living in Trapston, Northamptonshire in 1834 and he was christened on the 11 August 1834 in Trapston and had their residence as Trapston, Northamptonshire.
