Help needed with a death at sea please.
« on: Sunday 08 March 15 19:23 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Find my past are doing a free weekend until midday on Monday 9th.

I have found Peter Callison, I have been trying to find out what had happened to him for 10 years.

Find my past shows he died at sea on 13th July 1853, the vessels name was the Harold sailing out of Shields.  Could anyone please try to read the Masters name (it looks like Detchern), also what's written under place and cause of death plus what's written under the fee of 2 shillings and 4d.

His wife Jane Callison nee Townsend remarried in 1857, I have never been able to find a death certificate for Peter is that because this record is a type of death certificate?

Thanks for your help

what's written under place and cause of death

Fever @ Havanna

I think the Master's name may be written DETCHEON, but perhaps should be DETCHON (local name).

I have never been able to find a death certificate for Peter is that because this record is a type of death certificate?
The record you're looking at is from the Register of Wages & Effects of Deceased Seamen (National Archives, BT 153). I believe the GRO's records of deaths at sea begin only in 1854, so I don't think there'll be a certificate.

.....  what's written under the fee of 2 shillings and 4d.

It looks like it says 'Due to...' and then I can't make out the last one or possibly two words.

There are a few other places on the same page with something written under the Amount. They all say 'Due to.....' but I can't seem to figure out the last word, although one looks like 'Growers'.

According to Lloyd's Register of Shipping the master of the HAROLD in 1853 was  F Dotchin.
HAROLD WAS built in Sunderland in 1850, a Bark of 363 GRT owned by Power and Co. registered in North Shields.
2 shillings and 4d was the wages owed to him at the time of his death.
