I really do think the best option is to go for the marriage certificate of Mary Ann to Joseph Hawkins, at least you can be 100% sure then. The other possibility is to ask for a look up of the marriage at Newcastle St George, the registers are held at Staffordshire Record Office.

Just a thought, you mentioned your father suggested that a Jervis / Jarvis might have been the father of Richard, on the following page to Mary Ann (1891 census in Maer) there is an Allen Jervis aged 44, general labourer with a wife and 2 children. Also on that census for Maer there is a William Jervis aged 21. agricultural labourer, stepson to Thomas Cotton. So your father's suggestion may be a possibility.

I bought the certificate for the marriage of May Ann Smith and Joseph Hawkins .

It seems this is not our Mary ann smith as her father is a Potter named Frederick not Henry.

Hohum the search continues on what happened to our Mary Ann Smith.

Investigated the Captain of the Titanic Edward Smith and found out his Great Grandfather was John Smith 1730 (Ranton).
Can anyone tell me if John had any brothers.

I have worked my tree back to Richard Smith (Ranton) 1793 so possibly his father could be related to the Captains great Grandfather.
