Looking for HAYES info in Southern Ontario c.1800's
« on: Wednesday 11 March 15 04:11 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone :)
I am a newbie here and have hit a road block on HAYES information in Ontario (and possibly Michigan). I would be grateful for any information or tips. Here is what I am looking for and what I have found. Sorry if this is a little long, but I would rather give all the information in one go.

I cannot find any information aside from an obituary on my Great-Great Grandfather, Nathan George HAYES (1876 - Jan.30 1954). He married Gertrude LYMER (Glossop, Derbyshire, England Oct. 3 1881 - Apr. 6 1964). They had one son Norman Llewellyn HAYES (Mar. 24 1901 - Mar. 4 1989). All three of them are buried in Bowmanville Cemetery in Ontario, Canada and I assume they have lived in Bowmanville, ON for all their lives. I have had no luck on birth, marriage and death certificates for Nathan. I would love to find his parents and their extended family.

Here is the odd part...
I did find another HAYES family (Allen 1844-1911 and Hannah 'Annie' 1845-1925 of Hampton, Ontario) which it looks like Nathan could have possibly lived with according to the 1891 Census. Allen and Hannah had only 2 children, William & Maud. I am thinking Nathan could have been a Nephew. I found Hannah HAYES (maiden name Veale) obituary, where it states "a grandson Harley Hayes of Detroit, Michigan" and also a "Mr. and Mrs Nathan Hayes of Bowmanville". Which is very interesting seeing how my Grandfather's name is Harley.

Thank you for reading this and trying to help out.
I look forward to joining this community.

Hi,
I wonder if Nathan has been mis- transcribed as Mathew
see this 1881 census on familysearch.org

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MVF5-2MX

marriage of George HAYES (son of Nathan & Mary HAYES) & Fanny GIFFORD 1875 at Whitby, ONT (Nathan's grave says he was born at Whitby)

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FMN7-6Z4

Marriage of Mathew HAYES to Fanny LYMER

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZB8-9XR

I would look at the original if you can, to see what is actually written.

Nathan & Fanny/Gertrude seem to have had 2 children:

Norman LLewelyn HAYES

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FM47-CJK

Heleta Lillian 1903

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FMZT-YVG

Hope this helps.

The 1901 Canadian census shows Harley Hayes born 1894 - Whitby Ontario

William Hayes  35 Mary Hayes  30
Harley Hayes  7 Born Transcribed as 27 October 1893 but more like 29 th October 1893.

There is a birth record which shows Harley Hayes born 29 October 1893 - Father William Marwood Hayes. Mother Mary Reeson.

http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/

William Marwood Hayes was the son of Allen Hayes and Hannah.

William Hayes died 1st June 1904 - aged 38 years -  Darlington Twp Ontario.

Mary Gregory was remarried by the 1911 Census and living in Oshawa - no sign of Harley on that census

Jame Gregory  55 May Gregory  40
Meter Gregory  20 Ethel Gregory  13
Fern Gregory  12
