COMPLETED WITH THANKS Tamworth 1821 census
« on: Tuesday 17 March 15 15:23 GMT (UK) »
I have read that the enumerator for Tamworth parish for the census in 1821 named individuals in records which still exist.  My 4x great grandfather, Edward Jones, lived in Tamworth (1765-1821) and married Alice Bridge (1766-1825) at Tamworth St Editha in 1797.

Is it possible for someone to see if there is any record of them in 1821?  He was born in Bolehall.  I believe he was a cordwainer.  He died in August 1821, so was living at the time of the census which was held in May of that year.

If anyone is able to help me I should be most grateful.  :)

Try calling the Reference Section of Tamworth Library (assuming you're in the UK) - they have a very knowledgeable gentleman there (if only I could remember his name  ::) ).  I know that some records are held within the Borough Archives - I have looked at the electoral registers between 1741 and 1802 - but don't know if they hold the 1821 census details.

But, if you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer  ;D

Thank you both for your very prompt and helpful replies.

I see that Tamworth in Arden is listed under Warwickshire, rather than Staffordshire.  In the link it says the location is "Copies at CAMPOP Library and at ROB".  Can someone interpret that for me please?  :)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh  Tamworth Staffordshire/Warwickshire (it's on the border and historically parts were in both/either counties/county) and TaNworth in Arden in Warwickshire are two different places.

St Editha is the parish church of Tamworth.  St Mary Magdalen appears to be the parish church in Tanworth in Arden.  Have a look at GENUKI under Warwickshire.  :)

Until 1 April 1889 Tamworth was split between Staffordshire and Warwickshire.

In 1881 the Local Government Act stated that it was no longer satisfactory for boroughs to be divided by a county boundary.  The whole of the borough would come under the county with the largest population within the borough boundaries as at the 1881 census.  For Tamworth the figures were 2589 in Staffordshire and 2031 for Warwickshire and so Staffordshire won.  The effective date was 1 April 1889.

COMPLETED WITH THANKS Re: Tamworth 1821 census
« Reply #7 on: Tuesday 17 March 15 17:52 GMT (UK) »
Thank you all for clarifying matters for me - and so swiftly.  I had hoped that I might glean something unexpectedly available through the 1821 census.  However my interest is definitely TaMworth, not TaNworth.
[The link I was given by Lostris (page 132) lists it as "Tamworth (in Arden)", so I am not alone in getting them confused!]
Many thanks again.  :)
