Not sure if this will help in anyway, but you initially gave Eliza as being born "c.1871". The 1939 indicates 22/11/1871.

Thanks, but as it happens it doesn't help much, as I got her DOB from her birth certificate, which incidentally states it as 23 Nov 1871, so a day later than the 1939 record.

Her death remains stubbornly awkward. Given her age in 1939, I would be surprised if she re-married, though anything is possible. I would have thought she would have been buried and her death registered as a Bishop.

That doesn't surprise me - my Gt-G.Father shows a birth year six years after his baptism ???
With a very common surname, different calculated years of birth for each census he appears in, another from his marriage, another from his death and now another (although obviously wrong) from the 1939, I'm having real trouble confirming anything.
Back to Elza, couldn't easily see her in the Electoral Rolls around that time (hoping to trace her through). But then the transcriptions are so poor, as is my knowledge of Islington, she is probably hiding. If you know the area, maybe you can browse the images. Alternatively, if you know where her children lived, those areas might be worth looking in to (in the death indexes and/or Elec.Roll).

This still remains a major problem, she seems to have simply disappeared. I have tried - or at least I think I have - the most obvious things, but to no avail.

As far as I can see, between 1939 and 1971 (when she would have been 100) there are only five Eliza BISHOP deaths of approximately the right age: Q1 1941 Swindon, Q1 1942 Hereford, Q1 1948 Wandsworth, Q1 1957 Stourbridge and Q2 1963 Nuneaton.

If you extend the acceptable error on age at death, then there are three others: Q1 1956 Bethnal Green, Q4 1961 Surrey ME and Q2 1967 Manchester.

I know of no reason why she would be connected to any of those areas.

Not sure what to do next. I could obviously order all the above certificates, but that would cost a fortune and not necessarily provide the answer. Any suggestions?

Can I reflect this thread, as I am still trying to find Eliza's death and/or burial. The last confirmed sighting remains that found in the 1939 register when she was a widow aged 67 living at 73 Hornsey Road, Islington.

She then simply disappears. As far as I can see she is not living with any of her children.

Hi
Did you get any of those certificates? Most of them should now be available as £3 digital images.
Have you cross referenced those deaths with the 1939 Register? The Swindon one possibly may be unexplained, but age is one year out.
During the war years people did sometimes die in unexpected places (I've got an elderly Londoner who died in Dewsbury)

Not yet, but I will have to bite the bullet unless someone has a brainwave.
