Trying to find c 1812 Marriage in East Anglia John ROLFE and bride Martha
« on: Wednesday 18 March 15 10:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi, Everyone,
Have unsuccessfully been trying to find a marriage in about 1812 between a John ROLFE and his wife Martha.  John says he was from Brandon in Suffolk, and Martha from Bury St Edmunds, and they were living in Mildenhall in the 1841 and 1851 Census.  I've been imagining that their marriage ought to have taken place in the Suffolk/Cambs area, but the only union I can find between a couple with these names is one on 7th June 1812 in, variously, Christchurch, Greyfriars, Newgate, i.e. the London area.
I have the image of this page of marriages that shows them tying the knot, and John ROLFE is a widower.  He was an auctioneer in Mildenhall in the 1841 and 1851 Censuses, and their five children were all baptized there between 1814 and 1822.
Can anyone find a likely marriage closer to their East Anglian roots?
Many thanks,
Keith

Not the marriage, but this may be of interest from Freereg, if it's them they were unmarried in 1811.

Possible
There is a death/probate of John Rolfe late of Mildenhall who died 25/07/1857 a Saddler, on this probate was given to Martha Rolfe but she is said to be a spinster a legatee named on the will. Also a marriage 18/12/1809 to Ann Rambelow in Mildenhall he left under £20

A second John Rolfe probate 1858 this time the executors are Robert and Samuel Rolfe son of the deceased this one left under £200 Mildenhall

Are either of these two yours

Edit
There are two deaths for Ann Rolfe in 1854 one in the March quarter registered Bury St Edmonds and one in December quarter in Mildenhall

Wow, Groom, that's a very interesting and clever spot!
..and lots to consider and think about with all those records you have turned up, Jolee.
Thanks so much the pair of you, and I'll chew all these over for a while.  I suppose John Rolfe could have been a saddler in his earlier days, and then become an auctioneer, or had that as a second string to his bow.  He did have a daughter called Martha, his eldest daughter, baptised on 08-05-1814, and his wife Martha disappears from the Censuses too between 1851 and 1861, so she could well have pre-deceased him.  A previous marriage to an Ann RAMBELOW could also have occurred, and then Ann's death.  As far as I know the John ROLFE I'm pursuing just had the following children, Martha, Alice, Charles, Marianne (or Mary Ann), Eliza, so that first, 1857 probate is looking the more likely at the moment.
But I shall continue to keep an open mind on all possibilities..
Keith
P.S. Would Martha have ever been used as a mutation of the forename that somebody was given when baptized, i.e. would Ann have ever morphed into Martha.  Or perhaps this woman married as Ann in 1809, and her middle name was Martha.  Think I'm beginning to tie myself up in un-necessary knots now...

Bury and Norwich Post 07 February 1855
Death announcement on 9th ult (January) death of Martha age 72, beloved wife of John Rolfe saddler of Mildenhall after 3 days suffering from influenza.

So either John the saddler also had a wife Martha, or your John became a saddler. This John was predeceased by his wife Martha, so the spinster Martha likely to be the daughter mentioned below.

I'm wonder whether this might be better moved to the Suffolk board, as someone there might have access to parish records?

Martha Whiting aged 72 was buried 15th January 1855 at St Mary, Mildenhall.

There are two burials of a John Rolfe - the first I think is yours, so fits with John the Saddler

25th July 1857  John Rolfe aged 77   St Mary, Mildenhall.

The other is:

14th Dec 1858  John Rolfe aged 68  St Andrew and St Patrick, Elveden

John Rolfe Auctioneer is 72 on the 1851 census. His wife Martha is born in Bury St Edmunds so maybe marriage there.

In 1841 and 1851 there is a John Rolfe married to an Ann (as well as your John and Martha). This other John is abt 10 years younger. He is a farmer and gardener. This might be the one who married Ann Rambelow in 1809.

And another snippet from Bury and Norwich Post this one dated 18 January 1859

A request that anyone having a claim on the estate of the late John Rolfe Gardener of West Row Mildenhall to apply to the executors, Samuel and Robert Rolfe.

So the 1858 death is the John who married Ann and the 1857 is the John who married Martha and had daughter Martha
