Sykes family of Vale Cottage, Michelhurst, Yorkshire, England
« on: Wednesday 06 July 05 15:42 BST (UK) »
Can anyone tell me where Vale Cottage, Michelhurst is in Yorkshire, England? Is it near Mossley or Saddleworth? I am researching a John Sykes, of that place, who died Dec. 25, 1900?, aged 72 yrs., ( b.c. 1828 ), who is buried in Mossley with wife, Ann, who died July 25, 1893 ( b.c. 1828 ). Buried with them were son, James Sykes and his wife, Mary Ann, and their daughter, Ethel. Any information about these Sykes and about the location of Michelhurst would be very much appreciated.

Think you will find it is Micklehurst and it is near Mossley, which in turn is near Saddleworth. The area is one which used to be Yorkshire. Will have a look to see if I can find a map.

Does anyone have any information on this Sykes family of Vale Cottage, Micklehurst and its family origins? I have a bit more information to offer. James Sykes, s/o this John Sykes mentioned earlier, died Sept. 14, 1932, aged 60 years. James' wife was Mary Ann Sykes, who died Mar. 21, 1929 aged 58 years. Their daughter, Ethel, died Aug. 1, 1928, aged 26 years. They are all buried together in Mossley in the churchyard in Friezland. I am trying to figure out if he is the father of John Sykes ( b.c. 1857 in Golcar, who was in Saddleworth in 1881 and went to Mossley bet. 1891 and 1900 ) and if he was the brother of Benjamin Sykes ( b.c. 1823 in Honley, but was in Saddleworth with his family in 1861 and 1871 and was deceased bef. the 1881 census ).
Any help with figuring out this family would be very much appreciated!

Thanks, Nessie. A cup of tea sounds like a great idea. I think I'll take a break and enjoy a cup. Looking forward to hearing back from you, but there is no rush.

I'm trying to prove a connection between this Sykes family and the one I am researching. I'm working on this family research for a good friend of mine. Thanks for the site. I'll check it out.
