The marriage cert. will give his father's name & occupation. It will not state where he was born.

However, this should at least narrow things down on the census especially if the father was in the same trade from then until his (James') marriage to Nellie  ???

I don't know anything about his father unfortunately as my grandfather never met him or his  grandmother on that side.

it will not give you info about his birthplace. what it does provide is his fathers name and occupation. this might help prove or disprove that a particular birth might be his.  of course his name might be a common name eg john and his occupation labourer or something common place and not help a great deal but without at least this info you are really guessing.

I have just looked at one of my 1970's death certs and part 5 asks for date of birth and place of birth.

Have you looked at his death cert for that info?

I agree. With so little positive information it would be too easy to make assumptions and go down the wrong path

A birthdate of 2.10.1909 should be registered in the December qtr so if he was born in Lancashire there are 5 possible births on freebmd one of which is Birkenhead.  Birkenhead actually is Cheshire but has very close links to Liverpool and most people born there speak with a "scouse" accent

the Birkenhead James is on IGI - father Arthur / mother Florence and he has a middle name of Edward

freebmd - dec qtr 1909 James Hesketh - reg Ormskirk - Lancs bmd states registered Lathom ...
Lathom is not that far from Liverpool - there is a birth registered dec 1909 for James Hesketh - mmn Wainwright on Lancsbmd ..marriage 1903 in Skelmersdale..her name is Sarah so probably the wrong one , but maybe try and find out his birthdate just to make sure ?
AARouteplanner has Lathom High school to Netherton ,Liverpool as 11 miles ....might be worth researching this James Hesketh registered Ormskirk 1909 dec qtr
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

if this was my relative I would purchase both the death certificate and the marriage certificate.

this can be purchased online for 9.25 each from the GRO.

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

the info you would need to fill in the form is

death registered Jun 1979 Great Yarmouth Norfolk
Volume:10 Page:1187

marriage registered Apr-May-Jun 1973 Yarmouth Norfolk
Volume Number:4b  Page Number:1817

on the first page tick  the box that says GRO reference known and then on next page fill in details as above. if you have any difficulties filling in form come back to us

Hello again  :)

Thank you for the info, I think that his birthday could've been the 2nd of October. I'll try and purchase both of those records I think, just cos it could give me more to go off
