Gilmour family
« on: Sunday 22 March 15 02:05 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the William Gilmour born abt 1839, son of James Gilmour and Jane Shearer(Sherra, Shirrah). His Ontario Death registration says he was born in Leitrim, Ireland. When trying to find more information I found there was a Leitrim County and town of Leitrim in Galway. Any suggestions.

There are also townlands in Ireland called Leitrim but his death record does say "Ireland, Co. Leitrim."
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you for your quick reply. The copy that I had have is very faded. I did try the Leitrim County site, but did not get any further information, so I will see what other sites I can find. Thanks again.

RootsIreland (subscription site) has the most parish records online at the moment, but not many of their records are early enough for your William.

We can't do looks ups for RootsIreland but using their free search I couldn't see any possibles.

There will be more records online later in the year (free) all going well, fingers crossed, but even than they will only be searchable by parish not by name, so trying to find where in  County Leitrim William came from would be your best course for the moment.

Good point because those new records will only be RC.

According to the census records and death records for Williams parents, James and Jane (Shearer, Sherra, or Shirrah-this info from death records of their other children) their religion is Church of England. Census records for William also say church of England.
