I can't see any writing either - but I think the 'mountain' on the right is probably meant to represent Table Mountain.

... writing at the bottom right of the picture.

Something appears to have been written on the mount, close to the photograph, immediately below the right-most foot (as we look at it).
Maybe two short words each beginning with 'H' ?

Well spotted re the writing – I can't make it out either though. Unfortunately I don't have the original any more – it was given to another member of the family and I don't know if I'll be able to get another look at it.
Thanks everybody, for all your help!

It looks genuine to me. Harrismith was captured in August 1900. All a travelling photographer needed was a canvas backdrop and his camera and developer. They created 50 + mounted regiments and used whatever equipment they could find.

I took another look at the lower corner's writing at the highest resolution I have and took a screen shot. I would guess that it is an impression of writing the address on the envelope with the photo inside, or just writing a letter with the photo underneath.

They certainly look like Boer war uniforms but not neccessarily Australian – I found a number of British regiment photos online with the same style of hats as these.
I would agree they are cavalry too.
I doubt if I'll ever identify the men unfortunately.
Thanks for your help, everyone.

No - post August 1900.

Pre 1900 there would not be British soldiers in the Orange Free State. Say mid 1901 at the earliest as he had to get his card stock printed.
