Help please - 'Mary Ann' ship sunk in 1868

Thank ShaunJ.  But 1863 ?   I have just checked again on the photograph of his tombstone and it is definitely 1868.    Maybe it was after 5yrs they decided to accept he was never coming back and had drowned.  It certainly appears to be him in the entry you give.   Or maybe communication wasn't that swift and it took that time for them to be notified ?

How did you find that information ?  And is it possible there is  a report of the actual sinking of the ship and details of her voyage ?

The Roots.chat folks must have so much detail, literally at their fingertips, on so many websites, for all the information you so speedily find !

Definitely 1863 when they all died. Have you seen the actual grave, or just a photo? What you need is someone to actually view it, is it in Littlehampton?

There was a schooner Mary Ann that came ashore at Drogheda on 14 February 1863 but the newspaper reports are all about the NLI lifeboat rescue of the crew of 4, nothing about fatalities.

I can possibly use FindMyPast website at the library but I do not have it myself.   I keep intending to at least buy vouchers for credits.

I have a photograph of the grave stone, which someone sent to me.  I will enclose it.  I have zoomed in and it looks like 1868 to me.  I am not sure if it is Littlehampton.

No ?    Never !    You can see 1833 when he was born and the last number of 1868 is a clear two o's on top of each other !   You can see the curves on the left-hand side of the 8 surely.

However, I am prepared to bow to your superior knowledge !    Because the people on Roots.chat are certainly superior in their knowledge to me.

It's quite difficult to tell, I thought 3 at first, but then when I zoomed in thought 8. It certainly isn't such a clear 8 as the other 8s on there. You really need some one to view the grave and perhaps take a rubbing.
