1861 whereabouts Henry DELL b.1821 Oxford
« on: Sunday 29 March 15 06:27 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am wondering if this ancestor was back in gaol again at the time of the 1861 census. Would anyone please be able to tell me how to find out? I don't have paid access to old newspapers.

Henry DELL born Oxford November 1821
Married in Sept quarter 1847 to Mary Ann DRURY
Their first child, Henry, born February 1848
Henry is sent to prison :-
Name:    Henry Dell
Age:    27
Estimated Birth Year:    abt 1821
Date of Trial:    26 Jun 1848
Trial Year:    1848
Location of Trial:    Oxfordshire, England
Sentence:    Imprisonment
He got 3 months for  stealing
1851 he and his wife are living in Union Street, St.Ebbes with young Henry and 2 wk old Mary Ann
June quarter 1856 his wife, Mary Ann DELL (Drury), dies in Oxford
1861 his 2 children are living with his parents at 50 Friars Street, St. Ebbes
1871 Henry has now joined his 2 children at his parents home still at Friars Street
I think he dies in 1891 but I don't have him in any later censuses.

Any help would be appreciated.

Is this him and his brother?

John Dell was charged with assaulting PC Soanes whilst in the execution of his duties. It appeared from the evidence that the prisoner endeavoured to give some beer to his brother, Henry Dell, who as a prisoner was being removed to gaol after having taken his trial before the Recorder at the City Sessions. The prisoner, Henry Dell was being conveyed to gaol in the custody of Police Constables Soanes and Halton, and his brother John Dell, procured a quart of beer and offered it his brother to drink; the police interfered and a scuffle ensue, in which the assault was committed. The magistrate fined the prisoner 5s and 8s costs, or seven days imprisonment with hard labour.
Oxford Times 21 January 1865.

Trial of Prisoners
Henry Dell, labourer, charged with stealing 8 bottles of currant wine and other articles, the property of Mary Ann Jones, was acquitted.
Oxford University and City Herald, 14 April, 1860.

Stealing Wood
Henry Dell was charged with stealing blocks of wood, value 1d, from the yard of Mr Pether. The prisoner was discharged after a severe reprimand.
Oxford Times, 6 March 1869.

Henry Dell was charged with stealing various articles, and sixteen bottles of wine, the property of Mrs Jones, late of Holywell St. Mr G Brunner appeared for the prosecution, and Mr G Mallam for the prisoner- In consequence of the number of witnesses to be examined, the case occupied the court nearly for hours, and resulted in the committal of the prisoner for trial at the next City Sessions.
Oxford Journal, 21 January 1860.

There are many more including the inquest into the death of his mother in Friars St (is her name Ann?)

Didn't find one for 1870-71.

Have you checked him by initials in the 1861 census?

It would be easy to mis-read him  (but cannot see anything obvious in The Oxford Castle County Gaol and House of Correction).

Gosh, so much help and I wasn't able to get onto the computer yesterday to reply more quickly. Thank you all.

The Guernsey family, whilst very similar, is not the same. I had managed to find them early on and discount them. No Emma Jane was the baseborn dau of this Henry's sister Mary Ann b.1841.

Oh, you have done well. It looks as though he was a very naughty young man and got worse after his wife died. Yes, his mother was Ann (Armstrong) Dell, and I would very much like to see the report into her inquest. Also to see any other offences that you can let me have, please.
As I said above, his was not the family in Guernsey.

No, I haven't checked him in 1861 using initials. At the moment, whilst waiting for my eye operation in a couple of weeks time, I have let my sub to TheGenealogist go. However, it's a good suggestion for when I get it back. Sorry I didn't say that I have him in 1871 and 1881. It's just 1861 that eludes me, and I'm sure that he died in the Oxford Workhouse early Feb 1891 so wouldn't have been on that census.

Again, my gratitude to all of you for your help.

Here's some more to keep you going.

Henry Dell for using very abusive language to his next door neighbour, was discharged.
Oxford Chronicle 10 December 1842.

Edward Brown and Henry Dell were charged with wilfully damaging a stone pier in St Clements on Sunday morning last between 12 and one o'clock. The offence was proved by Owen Lewis, University policeman, and defendants, (both whose names had appeared in the black books several times before), were sentenced to seven days hard labour each, in default of paying the damage and costs 10s.
Oxford Chronicle 27 January, 1844.

Thomas Smith and Henry Dell , charged with having, at Stanton St John, stolen 60lb of lead, the property of the Rev John Wilson, of Woodperry. Each 3 calendar months hard labour in the house of correction.
Oxford University and City Herald, 1 July, 1848.

Henry Dell and Frederic Green were charged with an unprovoked assault on Robert Barratt, of St Clement's, and were sentenced to pay 10s each and 5s cost; Green to pay 5s more for the damage done to Barratt's hat, and in default to be committed to 10 days.
Oxford Journal, 5 October 1844.

Henry Dell was fined 5s, and costs 9s, for being drunk and fighting in St Martin's parish on the fourth inst.
Oxford Journal 17 November, 1849.

30 Oct 1841  Assault on John Wright, fined 10s and 14s costs or 14 days imprisonment.
Received parochial aid 13 Oct 1838. (must be his father?)
Recipient of 9s per week. Almsman. 1870. His father again. Aged 71 yrs.
1859. Insulting a University policeman.

What a character he was. There are so many more stories. I will look for the one of his mother and there is also one of his sons death. All these reports can be found with the Newspaper archives. You can buy a subscription on a monthly basis with them or you can get it through FindMyPast for the same price.
