1891 Shrewley, Hatton, no address details
« on: Monday 30 March 15 11:42 BST (UK) »
Hi All

I have located an 1891 census entry for my ancestors, but there are no address details. I have been back through all the pages and there is no address on any of them.

The Ref no is RG12/2467 and I am particulary interested in the Hannis family.

Can anyone help me with this? Or is it a lost cause.

Did this happen very often (that address details were missed off the census)?

The address will just be Hamlet of Shrewley

Details of enumerater's walk do not give any road names - this often happened in small Hamlet/villages. Sometimes the address would be given as "village" - so address hasn't been missed off the census - it was not necessary at that time to have road names and house numbers in small villages

If you look at the first page of the census pages for the village it does give a list of property names in the village but none have been included beside the actual households.

Thanks Both

I can see that perhaps in a small village they may not have thought they needed an actual address. Its a shame they werent more considereate of future researchers!

Kay, I had seen the first page thanks, I just wish they had thought to put them next to the actual names!

How much did people move around within a village, not much I suppose. There is either a Shrewley Road or Shrewley Hill mentioned on the 1881 so I will just go with that (with a note that it is unconfirmed)

1881 gives address as Shrewley Rd - but that could just mean "the road through Shrewley"

sometimes they didn't think it necessary to give house names .

You can find an approx location of your ancestors

Only one pub is llisted "Durham Ox Inn" - Fanny Lurkins occupation was "Inkeeper" -she is on page

There are a couple of farms mentioned -the wheelwrights shop  etc  - locate them (using occupation of head of house) and you can find approx where the household is - use it in conjunction with 1881 census

Also look for an old map which may help further

Thanks Suzard

I didn't think about the "process of elimination" to narrow down the possible choices. I can then add a "most likely to have lived in x or Y"

Perfect, now to put it into effect! (well not right now, perhaps after work would be better!)

The Durham Ox is still there, Shrewley is basically one long street still.

Hi Tracey, the canal tunnel in Shrewley is probably one of its best features, some pictures on this site.
