Beals family in Ringland Norfolk circa 1800
« on: Wednesday 01 April 15 10:52 BST (UK) »
I have been tracing the Whaites family back in Norfolk and found a marriage between William Waits and Harriet Beals (born 1836). (They move to Settle in North Yorkshire which is where my search started.)

Harriet Beals' father was John Beals (born around 1803 in Ringland according to the census records). I have not found his baptism records but the 1861 census shows him with his mother Lydia Beals (aged 86). I have found Lydia Beales widowed and working as a cook in 1851 for Richard Brickdale (Rector of Felthorpe). In 1841 Benjamin and Lydia Beals (listed as aged 60) living in Ringland with Julia Beals who I suspect is their grand daughter.

The only entries for baptisms I can find for Benjamin and Lydia Beals children in Ringland are Philip in 1800 and William in 1806. No listings for John (1803) or Julia's father Robert (1813) or his brother George (1811). Robert Beals marries Mary Stone in 1833 in Ringland and George Beals marries Elizabeth Ketting in 1835 in Ringland. Both families are living together in Ringland in the 1841 census.

Any help with parish records or other family connections would great. Also any links for William Waits family (born in Easton Norfolk in 1834, father Robert and mother Sophia).

When did Harriet marry William Waits? There's a bastardy order on the Norfolk site Alders quoted dated 1852 - John Stannard ordered to pay Harriet Beales of Ringland " 1/6 for 1st 6 wks, 1/3 thereafter with £1 6s 6d costs".

Thanks for the Norfolk link. I'd already found this but sadly the baptisms and marriages for Ringland are incomplete. I looked up Beals and Waits (sometimes written as Beales Waites or Whaites) but couldn't find the entries for the Ringland families.

I have just got a copy of William and Harriet's marriage certificate for 21st January 1855 (fathers Robert Waits and John Beals). Witnessed by Harriet's brother Elijah Beals and his wife Thomasine.

There is a Harriet Beals born 1834 to John's brother? Robert Beals. It's possible that she is the Harriet listed in the bastardy order.

Thanks for all your help. It will probably require a search of the parish records (not online yet).

I have the details of the Whaites descendants in Settle (some moved to Clitheroe and Saltaire later). It's a pity the census records only start in 1841 and are very basic in the early years. Thanks for the offer though. Much appreciated.

I've found a lot of early details on familysearch.org (Benjamin and Lydia Beals children Philip and William) but these are clearly links to other parish and census records.

Found some parish records that have Benjamin Bales marriage to Lydia Coe in Ringland on 16th October 1799. Think this could be my Benjamin and Lydia Beals.
