What happened to William Carvey
« on: Sunday 05 April 15 16:27 BST (UK) »
Trying to find out what happened to William Carvey born 1837 in Burford. He married Mary Ann Penelope Broadis (born 1837 London) on 7 December 1861 in Burford ( he is 24 and a baker ) and then disappears. I have Mary Ann in every census after 1861, she is always on her own and always describes herself as married. In 1911 she says she is “separated; protected by law” and has no children. I would love to know why they lived apart and what happened to William.

Any help appreciated
thanks Carolyn

Transportation of convicts had ended some years before they married.

Have you tried local newspapers for reports of any court proceedings e.g. for desertion or cruelty on his part?  If he was in an institution he might show up on the census, but listed by his initials only.

Hi Carol

I could not see him in any of the newspapers on findmypast. I thought about institutions but he can't have been in prison for 50 years ad not quite sure how to locate him in say asylums etc.

CarolA3,

Wikipedia (!) assures me that transportation continued until 1867 to Australia, as does the National Archives.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/research-guides/transportation-australia.htm

It was a semi-flippant remark, but backed up by a quick google search.

In 1881 there's a William Carvy age 41 boarder farm labourer unmarried born Burford Glos.
Living Reading Berks with Sturgess family.

Might be worth checking him out  :)

My apologies chempat, I was thinking of the ending of transportation to the eastern side in the 1850s.  Any resident of Western Australia should remember that convicts were sent here until 1868 :-[

As penance, I've checked a couple of databases and the only CARVEY transportee was an Emanuel in 1835.

I have some records for Oxfordshire County Asylum and will check them now.  Back soon.

Not listed at the Asylum at Littlemore (Deaths/discharges to 1893, burials to 1954).  If he was there, he either stayed past 1893 or was transferred elsewhere.

Not buried at Oxford Prison Chapel (records to 1952).

No death listed at Oxford's main hospital, the Radcliffe Infirmary (records to 1891).

Mary Ann's status in 1911, which I've not come across before, suggests that he was still alive then or she would have been a widow and not in need of 'protection'.

Not much help today, I'm afraid :(
