MORTON - Herbert Palmer 1897-1954
« on: Monday 06 April 15 10:44 BST (UK) »
Herbert Palmer Morton (1897-1954) Victoria.

I am seeking any information about Herbert Palmer Morton, b 1897 Near Herbert River, North  Queensland, and died in 1954 Fitzroy, Victoria.

Palmer fought in Gallipoli, Egypt and France during WWI.

According to Electoral Roll the year he died (1954), he was living at 6 Percy Street, Fitzroy with his wife, Louisa Adelaide Morton. When did they marry? Were there any children? Any information would be appreciated.

Was there a death notice?  Thanks.

Merlin

Wonderful help. Thanks so much for your valuable information.

I would still be interested if anyone else has further details on whether Palmer and Louisa had any children. Those children would be my mother's first cousins.

I highly doubt there are any children for Herbert & Louisa given her age when they married.

Her first husband died in 1947 & it appears Louisa was married to Herbert by 1949. You can see the alteration of her name change on the ERolls at the same address with her first husband John & then with Herbert.

I assume you have the details of Herbert's first marriage in QLD?

Thanks again Merlin

I am aware of his first wife Alice Vera Pritchard DUTTON. A warrant was out for him as he deserted Alice after returning from the war and ended up in Melbourne. There is another woman (we only have the details Rose Lillian for) which he may also have married at some point between Alice and Louisa. It seems bigamy was at play and he had lost his way after the war. We cannot know how it affected them I guess...

Attached is a clipping from the newspaper about his desertion (May 1927)

Hi,

His brother, Cecil Charles Morton also served in WW1 and he won an MC in 1918.
