Charles Edward EATON b. 1816 Cheshire
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 17:00 BST (UK) »
Sometime in the early 19th century Charles Edward Eaton took his wife to King township in Canada.
They had two children there - George Henry, b. 1843;  and Catherine, b. 1845.  They then must have returned to the UK as their next child, Frances Charlotte, b. 1853, was born in Claughton, Cheshire, and on the 1861 census Charles Edward and George Henry are listed, with an occupation which appears to be Ass Attorney (CEE) and articled clerk to Ass Attorney (GHE).  King is 80 miles from the East coast of Canada and in the 19th C. was a couple of tin shacks and a very rough muddy track.  Experts tell me that the only company that would have been around at the time was the Hudson Bay Company.  I have contacted them and they were very helpful, but in the end found no trace in their archives of Charles Edward.  The big question is What on earth was he doing there?
I also have not discovered him on any passenger list.

Another interesting point on the 1861 census, the maid's birth place is shown as New York!  Would he have been allowed to bring her back with him?

Any suggestions gratefully received.

In 1861 - Charles is shown as married - no wife shown

In 1861 Frances Charlotte is shown as the niece of unmarried brother & sister George (54 clergyman) & Catherine Eaton 49

1851 shows Charles & wife Jane b 1825 Galway - Charles is shown as a "managing clerk to attorney".

Unless they went back to Canada between 1851-1853 - the maid b New York may just be coiuncidence

Census show that George Henry was born West Canada which translates to Ontario.  There is a King township in that province.  Toronto area.  Where did you get the information that you were looking at a place in Atlantic Canada?

Suspect marriage may have been in Ireland - nothing on freebmd that fits with any of the births

Thanks to all for your input.  But I don't under
stand your question Cosmac "Where did you get the information that you were looking at a place in Atlantic Canada? "

The only reason I mentioned the East coast is that is presumably where his ship would have docked and then he would have an awful journey into the interior to get to King - for no good reason I could see, unless they needed attorneys out there - but Canadian sources tell me that Canada was pretty lawless at that time.  It's a mystery!

.....King is 80 miles from the East coast of Canada and in the 19th C. was a couple of tin shacks and a very rough muddy track...

King township in Ontario is over 800 miles from Atlantic Canada.  Did you mean 800 instead of 80.
