Searching for William INGRAM - my great grandfather
« on: Friday 10 April 15 04:04 BST (UK) »
I am searching for any details of the family of my great grandfather, William Ingram and his first wife, Jane Harriet Watson.

William was born in abt 1863 in London (according to his death certificate).  On this certificate, his mother's name was Elizabeth Fallon and his father's name was William Ingram, whose occupation was a Seaman.

William's marriage certificate dated 23 October 1884 shows his marriage to Jane Harriet Watson at The Register Office, in the district of St George Hanover Square, Middlesex.  His occupation was a Baker.

Also on this certificate, William was 22 years and lived at Tothill Street Westminster,  Jane was 20 years and living at Mildmay Park, Islington.  Her father was Thomas Watson (deceased at time of daughter's marriage) and his occupation was an Oilman.

William and Jane then had a son, William, in 1885 in the district of St George Hanover Sq.

The next piece of information regarding William and Jane is found in Brisbane, Australia, where they had a daughter, Ada Elizabeth Ingram born in Sept 1889.

The next years are all accounted for in Australia.

I am interested in William and Jane's families in England prior to them leaving London and arriving in Australia.

How did they reach Australia? - I have checked shipping registers into Aus and have been unable to find William, Jane and baby William.  They would have left London after the 1885 birth and arrive in Aus before 1889 when their daughter was born.

Is anyone able to please assist in tracing my family back?

Cheers . . . cmatt

Hi. There's a record on Ancestry for a 3yo William Ingram arriving at Brisbane on the Jumna on 13 Oct 1888. Also arriving the same date is Harriet Ingram age 24. Both from Middlesex.

No images.

If you don't have Ancestry, here's the Source Citation:

Thanks, StevieSteve

This looks promising.  I can't find William travelling on the same ship, though.  Maybe he came earlier.

Thanks for your help.

1881 Census Jean Harriet Watson, born c 1864 Islington, Middlesex, is living with her Grandfather JOHN born c 1816 Portsoy, Scotland.
He is a Widower, Occp Baker
Address is 84 Mildmay Park****

1871 Census
226 Essex Road,
Islington St Mary
RG10/287/5/3
John WATSON, 55, Head, Mar, Master Baker employing 2 Men, born Scotland
Jane, 47, Wife, Mar, born Cranbrook, Kent
Henry, 21, Son, Unm, Baker, born Islington
Sarah R, 16, Daug, Unm, born Islington
JANE H, 7, Grand/daug born Islington*****
Also in House a Assistant Baker and Nurse

Now if I have the right 1861 Census it is damaged as this is all i can make out;
It is the same address as 1851 though

4 Suffolk Place, Islington
John WATSON, 44 , Widower
Harriet E, Daug, Unm
Henry, 11, Son
James, 3, Son
Sarah M, Daug
Jane PETHURST, Sister in Law
Elizabeth Sethurst (pethurst), Lodger
Islington St Mary
RG9/144/157

1851 Census
4 Suffolk Place,
Islington, Middlesex
HO107/
John Walson, 34, Head, Mar, Baker, born Portsoy, Scotland
Harriet Walson, 30, Wife, Mar, born Cranbrook, Middlesex
Henry Walson, 1, Son, born Islington
Elizabeth Edden, 40, Visitor, Unm, born Biddendon
* Servants, Bakery Assistants;
Ann Balard, 22
Alexander McNeaice, 14
George Haskew, 14

So I cant see a Son Thomas for John!

Can find second Marriage though;
John WATSON, March 1867, Hackney, 1b 517
Jane PETHURST on same page

So did he marry 2 Pethurst Sisters!

1867 Marriage has him as Widower, Baker, Father JAMES (deceased) Ship Master.
She is a Spinster, Father JEREMIAH a Tailor.

1st Marriage 1844 Kent, Harriet PETHURST/John WATSON on same page

Trish :)

Hi Trish

Many thanks for all these great details.  I have been searching for a Jane Harriet and didn't take into account that mistakes are sometimes made when writing/transcribing names and that some people maybe use their second name as their first.  A beginners' mistake!

Thanks again, for your efforts.

Note that the Queensland immigration records are freely available WITH images on the QLD archives website:
http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/Indexes/Immigration/Pages/Immigration1848.aspx

Directly link to the passenger list here (they are on image 177 which is page 16 of the pdf)
http://www.archives.qld.gov.au/Researchers/ImmigrationIndexes/Documents/Jumna_1888_Oct_QSA_Item_18485.pdf

William definitely wasn't with them, so we can presume he went ahead.  I can't spot his entry into Australia yet, though.

I also can't spot an obvious census entry for him with his parents, or a marriage for them. Is his father's occupation still "seaman" at the marriage? Are the witnesses relatives?

At the time of the wedding of William and Jane, William's father's occupation is Seaman.  On William's Death Certificate, his father's occupation is still listed as Seaman.

The witnesses at the wedding of William and Jane are:  M A Britten and M A . ? . ridge.  The first one or two letters of this person's name are difficult to read.
