Coincidentally I have just been asked to research the family by a Nethercott.  Very opportune that I should catch your post.

It may be that Charles George Nethercott was not the son of James. A few years before he was born,  his mother gave birth to Lillian Johnson and at the same time was searching for James who may have gone to Queensland. It would be unlikely he would have returned after she gave birth to a child from someone else and continued the relationship.  The fact there is no record of a birth under his name in SA may confirm that.
